Sounds like a great road trip!
I agree that you should spend as much as you can on the next mandolin because usually it results in a better instrument. Play everything you can get your hands on and pay attention to how it feels as well as how it sounds. Action can be modified but the sound of any particular mando is what it is.
I disagree with spending another penny on a crappy instrument that will never sound anything but crappy even if it as more playable.
You want to be raised up by the sound when you play and there is no substitute for a wonderful mandolin!
