Default E. Mezzacapo: Princesse - Gavotte (with score)

Eduardo Mezzacapo (1832-1898): Princesse - Gavotte

According to Wikipedia, Mezzacapo was an Italian mandolin virtuoso who moved to Paris early in life and there became founder of "l'Ecole de mandolin française" (The French Mandolin School). He was a prolific composer for mandolin, publishing pieces for solo, ensembles and orchestras -- there are about 50 of his compositions in the Nakano archive. A few of his pieces remain in the repertoire of mandolin orchestras in Japan, Italy and Germany, as shown by various Youtube recordings. However, this joyful gavotte does not appear to be in current circulation, and is well worth resurrecting.

Original published for mandolin with either guitar or piano accompaniment, and with optional second mandolin and mandola parts for quartet playing. I'm playing all four original parts on two mandolins, mandola and tenor guitar (quartetto romantico).

    1915 Luigi Embergher mandolin

    Hi Martin Jones,

I just spotted your posting. I am a big fan of Mezzacapo since first hearing and playing Napoli with the Aurora Mandolin Orchestra in Palo Alto, CA, in 2013. I've since acquired a number of pieces and perform numerous of them. The most recent one I found, (yesterday!) is Response Aux Reves Amoureux which is quite charming! I play mandolin and my partner plays piano which is all this chart includes.

I tried to check out the Nakano Collection you mention above but perhaps because of a combination of my weak computer skills and a less-than-intuitive web site I had no luck.

I am eager to get more music by Mezzacapo. Unfortunately the chart you posted comes out blank when I try to download it. If you like, I would enjoy communicating directly with you so as to compere "notes" so to speak!

I enjoyed listening to your recording, good job!

    Best regards,

    Billy Packard

    Eduardo Mezzacapo (1832-1898): Duchesse Gavotte

I recorded Mezzacapo's "Princesse Gavotte" in 2016, and posted it in the original message in this thread. Here is his "Duchesse Gavotte", presumably a companion piece of sort -- both tunes have the same instrumentation and similar (easy) level of accessibility. I'm playing this one a bit faster (and better, I think): it's a fun tune.

I note that there appear to have been two mandolin composers/performers of the same name, the other being active in London and Paris around 1900-1920 and dying in 1942, presumably the son (or even grandson) of the original Eduardo. Based on the publication year of 1894, I think this tune was written by Eduardo senior, but there is some ambiguity.

Hi Martin! I hope you are well.

I was wondering if you have the piano part for the Mezzacapo, 'Bonita'. I have the various orchestra parts thanks to you but there is only the first page for the piano. My dear Alexis is a wiz on the piano and gets by interpreting the guitar part but all of the Mezz. piano parts so far are very cool and obviously composed by an artistic and thoughtful pianist. Likely Mrs. Mezzacapo?

I would be most grateful for your assistance.

    Best regards,

    Billy Packard

    Hi Billy,

Sorry, I only have the quartet version of Bonita. Not sure if it would help, but there is a mandolin and piano live recording on Youtube:

Thanks Martin. I'll refer it to Alexis who will likely extrapolate essentials. I also put a request on the FB page but it's from 2014 so who knows if that will pan out.
