Default English Translation of Leone's Method?

Is anyone willing to share, or point me in a direction to find, an English translation of Leone's Method?

    Rob,
An English translation of Leone's method was published in London in 1785. There are copies in the British Library and also at Oxford. To my knowledge, there is no modern edition.

Three U.S. libraries have microform copies of this English translation: see

Rob: Are you working from some edition of the Leone method? I was lucky to acquire the Minkoff reprint as described on this thread.

Minkoff. 1983. Methodes de Mandoline including Leoné (1768) Méthode Raisonnée pour Passer du Violon à la Mandoline et de l’Archet à la Plume, Fouchetti (1771) Méthode pour Apprendre Facilement à Jouer de la Mandoline à Quatre et à Six Cordes, & Denis (1768, 1769, 1773) Méthode pour Apprendre à Jouer de la Mandoline sans Maitre, vols. 1-3. Minkoff Reprint, Geneva.
I don't really know French but through context and Google translate I can figure out enought of what they are saying. Primarily when I worked through these methods I just play the notes anyway. The notes don't have to be translated.

I had a vague go at trying to get a print from the British Library, but it wasn't on offer. We have been given a couple of pages from it for a class I am doing, picking patterns basically.

As you can find on my Mandolin Methods page on my MandoIsland website about this method a scan of the French edition is available at the bnf (French National Library), and my scan made from the Minkoff edition (good quality for printing) is available on my musicaneo site.

It would be great if the English edition would become available too, but I have no idea how to get it.

I emailed the British Library about this last week. Assuming they are scanning from hard copy, the price would be :

    Imaging prices for 2017/18

    Standard digital images

£31.08 First image of each item

£8.30 Subsequent images from the same item

I believe this means that you pay £31.08 for the first page and £8.30 per addition page.

    Too pricey for me.

I also asked my local library for a loan from U of PA for the microfilm version. This would have cost me $20 and I'd have had to use the film viewer in the library and 1) who knows if I would be allowed to print or snap images of each page?; 2) the quality of microfilm images varies widely (and wildly) ... so would it have been worth it? I opted out.

There is, but not for rare manuscripts there's only one of.

I was hoping the scanned images would be good enough -they cost a lot less at $0.41/ subsequent image. Total cost would be > £40 that way. I was going to check on copyright to make sure that they could be shared.

To my surprise, I located a copy of this at the Library of Congress. You can now see the catalog record for it: https://lccn.loc.gov/2017560975

Because the Library of Congress may be as inaccessible as the British Library for most of us, I am currently transcribing the 17 pages of Leone's instruction into a Word document; the rest of the book is the same music in the French edition found at IMSLP. Will I be able to post this transcription as a PDF here? (Due to a heavy Christmas cooking schedule for the next few days, this won't be done immediately!)

I found a pdf with an explanation of the theory in Leone's method (Gervasio, Denis, etc.), but it's in spanish. It's a work of Pedro Chamorro, with a foreword of Magda Wilden-Hüsgen.

This is the link of the pdf:

In the attachment, the part dedicated to Leone as an example.

So I have finally finished transcribing the English translation of the instructional pages from Leone's method. I do hope this will prove as interesting, instructive, and useful to others as it has been to me. I have attached a pdf of my transcription for your use. Happy New Year, folks!

Mandogio, thank you so much for sharing your transcription. This will be very instructive. Chris Acquavella used a few pages from the Leon Method in his 2014 San Diego Classical Mandolin Camp lessons, and I found it very beneficial. The English translation is great to havel.
