Diff between 4 and 8 string electrics

True that the technique differs, but mainly in degree; the sweet spots are fewer, and more muscle is in order, and yes, light strings are needed. I found light strings equally fussy about tuning on guitar, but one learns the way to settle the tuning on a particular instrument. Here's a good bending example, Red House. String gauges are .010, .014, .024, .040, and .056.

Using even lighter strings I bend on my 10-string, but that requires stopping one of a pair from sounding. Sounds tricky but it gets easier after practice.

There is something about a four string-- mandolin pitch, chord shapes and scales, but single strings for bends and vibrato. The small electric guitar factor is what swayed me to go 4 string!
