    Default RIP: Keith Emerson

    E.L.P Keyboardist Keith Emerson...

Don't watch the video clip Rolling Stone has embedded. It does not do him justice at all.
This one is much better, as is this one

I dusted off "Brain Salad Surgery" the other day and gave it a spin. It hasn't aged that well (the LP or the music), but interesting to listen to what I thought was brilliant when I was in high school....

Yeah, I'll always be a fan, Tarkus really spoke to me as a teenager; I reclaimed it a decade or two back and yes, dated music, but who can deny Keith's keyboard genius? Gotta love it.

What a powerhouse of a musician! Totally blew me away during the mid 70's when I was teenager and 1st heard him on the live ELP 3 record set, his wonderful use of syncopation and chord voicing were always a rich delight, such colour and invention, and that was just on the grand piano. His work on the Hammond organ and synths were another universe of colour altogether, his sound will always be in the back of mind. Remembering "Karn evil 9 1st impressions", I could never imagine as a teenager how anybody could compose such frantic and fascinating music.

He made the music to my own dark teenage dreams. I hope he has come to brighter pastures himself.
