By popular demand, we have put together a set of the gauges of EXP strings that Chris uses. The Tension Chart lists the "E" as an .011, but that is a typo we are correcting.
The gauges are: .0115, .016, .026, .040

Outstanding!!
Wonderful! This is what I've been waiting for. Those are the exact gauges I prefer on every string, but haven't been able to get a set that's coated. Can't wait to try them!
And then I'll sound like him, right?
You could buy a Loar, a CT 55, these strings, hit an open "D" and possible still not sound like him.
YES! Thank you!!! Can't wait to give these a try.

Something to put on my Christmas list!
Oh D'Addario, why must you take all of my money? I will be trying these out shortly.

I wish they made them with those gauges, but without the coating…
I really hate coated strings… Hate…
They appear to be half J74, and half J75.
G & D are J74, and E & A are J75 gauges.
Might be cool.
I will try them, but I am expecting to hate them simply because of the coating.
They're certainly worth a try so I went looking for them on the Internet. The only places that I could find that had them were on the other side of the pond. I ain't payin' those prices.
Why not buy them straight from D'Addario.
They have a Buy Now button on the website.

sounds like an interesting mix. i'm a consumer of the exp74s on my F models.
at my end however, i don't think i need any more beef, or the extra tension, on the E and A on my red diamond or newson mandolins. do you think these strings were/are in the works for his loars? curious to know if guys with the mandograils use/need the heavy metal for those specimens. just gotta wonder what it all means, alfie.
i wonder if they are aware of the mistake in the tension table in their web link for the strings? no tech editor for copy?
I bought a set. Have not tried them yet. Will use them next and post a review.
Tommcgtx,
I have only tried them on guitar.
They were the "ClearTone" strings.
I simply hated the way they felt
It is hard to explain, but they felt sticky and rough.
It was really hard to slide up the frets.
I found it hard to play.
I was constantly think how much I hated the strings.
I changed them to regular uncoated strings after two days and suddenly I loved playing that guitar.
CWRoyds, your experience is exact opposite from mine. However, I've never tried the cleartones so maybe they are totally different than the Elixir, D'Addario and GHS that I've used through the years.

Don from D'Addario here - how we coat our strings and how our competitors coat their products are completely different. That's not to say, you won't dislike ALL coated strings. But since we coat our own wire, we're able to put a microfine coating on the string. Give a whirl and we'll be interested in hearing your thoughts. They're all i play because I sweat like a toxic monster.

There's no secret to these gauges, it's half of an EXP74 set and half of an EXP75. That's what Chris uses, so we put a set together with those gauges. The previous option was buying singles or breaking up two sets, neither of which are optimal solutions. There's an EXP video on our site where Chris talks about his string preferences.
Yes, we are aware of that Tension Chart typo, which is why I mentioned it in my original post.
They have them listed at Strings And Beyond. You have to go to the EXP mandolin strings page and choose EXP74CM in the drop-down menu for "gauge". The price per set is cheaper than buying straight off the D'Addario site, and you get free shipping if you order $35 or more.

Great, I just ordered a set, I have broken up a lot of j74 and j75 sets to get this combo for quite sometime. I've never tried the exp's though, hope I like the coating.
Question though, what does CM stand for in EXP74CM?
