Steve, that is classic! Nice work brother!
Just because I haven't posted anything here for a while, here's one of the things I'm working on.
The mahogany that this neck blank is made from is not wide enough for a peghead. This guitar is to have a slotted peghead so I didn't want to glue "ears" to the sides, and instead I went back in time for this V joint. This gives me straight grain in the peghead (rather than the severe run out in the peghead of a one-piece neck) while hiding glue lines through design and construction features. The "diamond volute" will be carved later.

The same guitar has this "stellar" rosette!

Your joinery is indistinguishable from perfect, John, at least in a photo on the internet. I'm trying to imagine me having to lay out that joint and it blows all the geometry circuits in my head.

Clark, my first test on scrap went pretty well, and I left plenty of material and proceeded slowly. It's one of those things where experience sure can really speed things up!

beautiful work, John!
It has been a while since I posted a picture of what is on my bench.
First I put a new fretboard with gold Evo frets on my Black A-4. For some reason there was an inbuilt curve in the neck. So I ironed that out so to speak.
The second mandolin in the picture is my sixth mandolin I have built. It has waned in its case for the last three years since I started building it. I got more interested in making and repairing violins in the last three years. I might make one mandolin a year from now on. I have plenty of good wood lieing around in boxes.
So I finished the headstock inlay. I am waiting for some pearl dots to arrive so that I can finish the fingerboard. In the meantime I will finish some violins and get them set up to play.

It is still there Pat without the frets. In fact it is slightly larger than the one that was on there originally. I also did away with the bound fret board. It makes it easier for future refretting. I think that it also looks just as good as the previous bound one.
