THE PHILADELPHIA MANDOLIN SOCIETY PRESENTS ITS INAUGURAL CONCERT ON FEB. 1, AT 8:00 PM AT ST. GEORGE'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN HAVERTOWN PA (1 ARDMORE AVE, ARDOME PA 19003) This joint performance by the Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble and the Munier Orchestra marks the launch of the Philadelphia Mandolin Society, which is dedicated to the promotion of all genres of mandolin music and performance throughout the Delaware Valley. Established in 2006 by Joe Todaro, the Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble performs an eclectic blend of world, classical, and popular music (much of which is arranged or written for the ensemble by group members). Founded in 1957, the Munier Orchestra carries on the tradition of the American mandolin orchestra, which flourished during the early decades of the 20th century. Under the direction of its current conductor, Mark Linkins, Munier draws upon a large body of classical mandolin music spanning more than 400 years, with special emphasis on repertoire from the Golden Era of the Neapolitan mandolin (1880s-1920s). Both Munier and the Philadelphia Mandolin Ensemble feature the various instruments of the mandolin family in combination with classical guitar, bass, and percussion. The program features several soloists: Bridget Kasinskas (violin), Jessica Satryan (voice), George Abramson (mandolin and voice), and John Lionarons (hammered dulcimer).
