Does any one have any idea what type of mandolin the guy from mandolin orange plays? I have never seen one like it.
Good video of him playing it here:

I really dig these guys, very understated and pure. I'd love to find some good mandolin tabs for their stuff, especially that particular track.

Interesting. This link goes back to 3 separate thread inquiries and the only guess was "it appears to be re-necked '30s Kalamazoo". Could be. Or maybe still a mystery.
They are listed to appear at Merlefest this year. A refreshing and paired down sound that I find compelling.
These guys are great! Love the simple acoustic guitar and very tasty mandolin, great tone. There are some videos with him playing an F-style as well and it sounds just as great. Sometimes she plays fiddle and he plays guitar. They are playing in Davis on Feb 7 and we got tickets last night. Thanks for posting, I love them, Just my cup-of-tea! Ha,ha,ha,ha

Saw these guys last Friday night, they were great and that mandolin does sound great!! The guys name is Andrew Marlin, the instrument with the Eagle on the headstock is an old R.L. Givens, and he loves it! Before that he was playing an Eastman, and he also has an old Kalamazoo with a longer neck, but his player is the Givens! Someday he really wants a Nugget, MAS rages on! I posted this in another thread as well and then found this one, in case anyone's interested...

Thought you might appreciate a fresh video of Andrew and Emily.
Looks like a Kimble in this video.

Yes, I seem to remember another forum thread that indicated Andrew Marlin had sold his Givens and was playing a Kimble now. I would have posted to that thread had I found it before this one.
I wouldn't claim to know these two, but I have met them on a couple of occasions. They were friendly and approachable. Andrew had nice things to say about my Morris when he played it.
It's nice to see that they seem to have found a good home at the Yep Roc label.
check out around 8:30 and you get more playing of this man

I think he sold that Givens the next week after we saw them, but it sure sounded sweet!! He coaxes tone out of everything he plays.

nice mandolin sound, love this group-looks to be his older mandolin, not the current newer one

Andrew playing that same Givens on a nice little bluegrass break @ 2:09. 4? years back or so - dunno if that band still exists. Great sounding mandolin imo. Would have been hard for me to part with it.

There was some good news and some bad news for those who heard Mandolin Orange perform Saturday night in Raleigh, N.C.
The bad news first: Mandolin player Andrew Marlin had lost his voice and was unable to sing. This wreaked havoc with the setlist (and ended up causing MO to cancel a Sunday night hometown show in Carrboro).
The good news: Andrew devoted all of his energy to the mandolin work (except for one banjo tune) and gave the fans an excellent display of musicianship.
The reason I'm posting in this two-year-old thread, though, is that at one point Andrew joked that he had lost his voice on purpose so he could spend more time playing his new mandolin.
Here's what his partner in crime, Emily Frantz, had to say about that comment when I asked her about it online:
Andrew's mando is a John Sullivan (Portland maker, passed in 2007). He got a Sullivan F style about a year and a half ago and is totally in love with it. He got a really rare opportunity to own the A-style when he met John Sullivan's widow in Portland back in October. He is smitten with it. The Kimble is no longer in our lives, but i hope it is making someone happy somewhere!!
The John Sullivan A model is "Ella" (John named all his instruments), a really nice sounding mandolin, and John's personal instrument...
Lots 'o pics here...

Andrew was playing the Sullivan A today. His current arsenal includes both Sullivans, a Henderson, and a Gil.
