  1. Re: "New techniques" for instrument restoration (NMC)

I don't think this guy is stupid. He has 320,000 subscribers. This guitar restoration video has had over 900,000 views. One of his other videos (Antique Shovel Restoration) has had 4.9 million views....

    Re: Hi from a newbie.

    Welcome Mike . . .

If you want to make carved style mandolins, I think you'll find that the wood sold for making violins is about the right size (not sure about the sides though). Touchstone...

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

My bracing is much lighter than Joe Mendel put into the one he made for Walt (post #12 & 16). Walt put some pretty heavy strings on his. I will be using much lighter ones.

I took Marty Jacobson's advice (post #12) and added some lengthwise struts. These will also support the ends...

    Re: Warps in bent sides

Put a sturdy piece of wood against the strut on the inside, another on the outside, clamp it up tight. This is assuming the guitar is partly assembled and not in the mould.

:)) Challenges enough on this one, thanks!

I think I've covered most aspects of the build that are different because of the fan-fret format. I'll post occasional photos as I pass significant...

    Re: Warps in bent sides

I think this is caused by varying run-out within the board. Gluing small struts to the side may help to hold it flat (some builders do this anyway). Scraping may even it out a bit. I find it doesn't...

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

One of the most difficult parts to get clear in my mind was how to handle the neck/head transition. The simplest way is just to plane the head perpendicular to the top of the fingerboard, but that...

Here's the fingerboard. I did it early in the build because I need it to do the head/neck angle.

Re: Improve playability on budget mandolin

The easiest way to deal with this problem is take the frets out, plane the fingerboard flat, re-saw the fret slots then put the frets back (or install new ones). You will need to plane it down by 2mm...

    Re: Harp mandola

Technically, a harp has strings that run at right-angles to the soundboard. If they run parallel to the soundboard, it's a lyre.

Gibson 5-string mandolin oddity on eBay

Gibson mandolin body with a five-string banjo neck. Looks as if it's been rather sadly treated but not beyond redemption.
