I was always told that, in the guitar world at least, binding protects the edges of the top, and to a lesser extent, the back, from impact that would lead to chips, splits, and cracks. I suppose...
I was a big Chick Corea fan in the 1970s and beyond. The only time I saw him was in the mid-70s in RTF, with Stanley Clark, Al DiMeola and Lenny White. What a show! The level of musicianship on the...
For me, it depends on the wood and the finish. I have several instruments in honey/amber color, and gold looks best with them. 1920s F4 looks great with the tarnished silver-ish hardware.
Don't...
I would agree that while most folks have temperature-controlled houses, fewer have relative humidity controlled houses.
Dunno, I was always told that rapid changes in humidity (or temperature)...
Allen raises a good point about high strings. If the intonation is correct (i.e., bridge in the right place), that's a good thing to check.
I would check intonation first. Is it in tune at the twelfth fret? That is, is the octave harmonic in unison with the fretted note at the twelfth fret? If not, that's the place to start.
Other...
Seems kind of pricey for what it is. A framed mirror that can be leaned up against the stand seems like a better idea; you can just return it to the wall when you're done. <shrugs>
There's another recent thread on the Cafe about this builder's instruments:

Kinda cool stuff. Not playing electric instruments...
A few years ago, I made the switch to the classical position, on the left thigh rather than the right, with the neck more vertical, for all fretted instruments larger than the mandolin. Mandolin...
A Googie-inspired 4-string! I love it!
Looks like something Jet Screamer would play. Eep-Opp-Ork-Ah-Ah!
I assume it is made of an open-cell foam, so it would not be like putting a dense substance (flesh) against the back? Dunno, I don't have one, don't use Tone Gard either. I would think this is a lot...
So long as it's a country song...
The walnut back on the natural-topped one is something special. Well, the other one is pretty nice, too.
NO, I DON'T need another mandolin!:whistling:
I have been using Venta Airwashers for probably 15 years now. They are not cheap, but they do work well. After about 12 years, I replaced the motors, but using the recommended water treatment, and...
Well, I agree with you on Rhiannon Giddens, but not so sure about banjo jokes. Blasphemous seems a bit much. Maybe "somewhat cruel, but still funny."
One of my favorite Glenn Miller tunes, played well by the whole group. Tasty!
Just like John above, my parents lived through the big band era, and I hated the stuff as a kid, but now love it. I...
I use this as well, and it works fine. I thought it was a bit pricey, but it does have varying height.
Not as cool looking as the Northfield, though, by far.
Yes, this.
Of course, the problem is that early in the process, you don't have that ear or feel for what is right or what is wrong. I would never advise anyone to get an inferior instrument to...
The University of Louisiana Press site has some page/image captures. Some really beautiful instruments there.
Well, not quite the same thing. But, "Duke Morrison" doesn't quite have the right ring to it, does it?:whistling:
Bill! I was hoping you would show up with the Pontiac tank! I couldn't locate my pic of it.
I made the switch from right to left leg about ten years ago when I decided that I should learn some classical repertoire. I originally just used it for classical (nylon strung) guitars, but it felt...
I will echo the comments above. I have played nothing but fingerstyle for a lot of years, but when I made the change from flatpicks and strumming to fingers, I was playing a D35 and an even narrower...
Yeah, same here. The ad says to click on the picture, but it didn't go anywhere. So I looked at another ad by the same seller, and that link worked, so I searched the site for the 3 pointer. Yeah, I...
