Re: Some Questions on New Purchase

I meant that 12's should work for you, not that you should use phosphor bronze. :)

Re: Some Questions on New Purchase

I have a Hathway octave mandolin with a 19" scale. I tune it GDAE, an octave lower than a mando. D'Addario make an octave mandolin set with 12's as the top e. Works for me.

  3. Re: Info on J. Bovier mandolins, please

I have one of about 250 of Jeff's JBovier solid body electric mandolins. Met him at NAMM in 2006 or 2007 when these had first come out.

I love my EMC-5 and wish he was making more. Jeff was...

  5. Re: Electric Octave Mandolin. 4 vs 8

    Hi Miles,

Expect a solid body electric octave mandolin to remind you a lot of an electric guitar. It won't matter whether it has 8 strings or four (or 5).

If you really do want both a...

    Re: Schwab #79

    Indeed very cool.

Went to 5 strings when I bought my JBovier EMC-5. At the time I made a promise to myself to get comfortable with the low C and not fixate on the top 4 strings. That was one of...
  7. Re: Favorite Electric Mandolin Albums or Artists?

Playing 5 string I am really enjoying the low end of the instrument. I've probably always been a natural mandola player, but one has to arrive at these things in stages I guess.

    Bb is one of my...

    Different Plectra

I have just discovered that for my electric single string course mandolins I prefer Dunlop PrimeTone 1.4 Triangles.
(I still prefer Wegen TF140s for the paired course standard mandos.)

    Re: Warren Ellis 5

at 26", the scale length would be friendly for a mandocello tuning with an e on top.

    Re: Hiscox cases

Yes! I got one with my JBovier EMC-5

    Thoughts:
    - Small thing: I wish mine had three latches rather than two.
    - I let my 5 year old use it as a stool
    - If your mandolin is an odd size/shape,...

Looks great Gary! And an octave to boot!

But why are you rummaging around in my head looking for buttons that say "tempt me"?

  15. Re: Noise with cheap magnetic pickups!

Been there. It's not your mandolin's fault.

I agree about finding the an outlet on a circuit that does not include the lighting. It'll help immensely.

    Re: Magnetic Pickup Advice

If the acoustic sound of the mandolin is rubbish, you might benefit from a good set-up. The foot of the bridge could be poorly fitted, the intonation could be out a little as well. If you have a...

Just thought I'd drop a pic.

I'm thinking about asking Etienne van Hove about making a 5 string, 15" scale length version of the mandobird with 2 pickups. Banjo tuners would be de...

    Mandobird revisited

Back when these had been out about a year or two and production was ramping down, some big box retailers were selling Mandobirds on the cheap. The sea foam green and the sparkly gold were not...
  19. Re: Emando players: What do you want in an amp?

    Hi Martin,

Great question! I've been trying amps for what seems like years, and I have come to the conclusion that guitar amps are a compromise for emando players, like socks that are warm and...
  20. Re: NMC Electric Guitar Alternate Tuning Gauges/Tension Question

Watch this Premier guitar rig rundown.

It's Robert Fripp's guitar tech talking about his set up. Fripp tunes to something he calls New Standard. It's basically a 5 string mandocello tuning with...

    Re: Mandolins in the works

I've been looking at the bench photo again... (bad idea for me!)

The mahogany LP at the back... What scale length is that? Looks a bit longer than usual, which piques my interest. :)

  22. Re: Good idea / Bad idea ?? Suede back

Waylon Jennings covered his Tele in tooled leather. I always thought it looked pretty cool. I doubt it has any measurable effect on a Tele.

  24. Re: 5 string electric mandolin string info

    I've used D'addario XL's and Ernie Ball Super Slinky's.

    11p 16p, 24w, 42w, and 56w

These go on both my 14.25" JBovier EMC5 and my 15" Arrow G5. I have to say the Ernie Ball strings were less...

Tell us about the yellow one. :)

I like yellow emandos and yellow strats. I have no idea why.
