    Re: Humidifier

+1 I think something like this is the way to go. I do the same.

Re: Question about recent Gibson F9's and F5G's

Thanks for all of that! It's very helpful. Maybe I would grow to like a flat board and narrow nut after a while. And you're right, the neck profile probably has more to do with playing comfort (or...

Re: Question about recent Gibson F9's and F5G's

I saw that, and I would definitely consider one of those. There is also an F9 that just came up in the classified (flat board and narrow nut). The challenge is that I'm very skeptical to buy...

Re: Question about recent Gibson F9's and F5G's

That's right, I wasn't clear in my response. All of the newly re-issued F5Gs have a radius fretboard and a wide nut. But those have just recently been made available and are not on the used market....

Re: Question about recent Gibson F9's and F5G's

True, I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but I have gotten used to a radius fretboard, 1 1/8" nut, and jumbo frets. And I plan to keep my current mandolin and keep playing it. So I don't know if I can...

Re: Question about recent Gibson F9's and F5G's

Thanks for the info. I'm only going to buy something I can play in person, so that definitely makes things more difficult. You're right about the Florida, I could just scoop it, but I have also...

Re: Question about recent Gibson F9's and F5G's

Thanks for the info! I didn't know any of that. If they just re-introduced the new F5G then I won't be finding one of those used any time soon.

It sounds like my best bet might be to look for an...

Question about recent Gibson F9's and F5G's

I'm looking around at used F-style mandolins in the $4000 - $5000 range and I like the tone of Gibson mandolins (more on the traditional side).

Is anyone familiar with recent Gibson models (not...

Re: EML Picks? Or other casein picks?

My bad, BC picks are $35 not $50.

Like I said in the post above yours, when I received my Red Bear Picks I realized they were not the same material as my EML pick. At that point I realized the...
  11. Anyone know where I can get resin picks? (EML Picks)

I recently started a thread asking about EML picks (looks like Eric isn't making them any more) and where else I can get a casein pick. But then I realized my EML pick is resin and not casein. I...

Re: EML Picks? Or other casein picks?

Well I got a couple casein picks, one from D'Addario and one from Red Bear and they're both OK but for some reason I wasn't liking them as much as the EML pick and they didn't sound the same. Then I...

Re: EML Picks? Or other casein picks?

Thanks for the suggestions! I bought a D'Addario casein pick and it's actually pretty nice. Not as nice as the EML though.

I also ordered a couple Red Bear picks but haven't received them yet...

I forgot about Red Bear! I'll check those out. Anyone know if they're similar to EML?

EML Picks? Or other casein picks?

I just found an EML pick that I had purchased a while back and had forgotten about. I really like it and so I went to see if I could get another one. It looks like he (Eric, I think) is not making...

Re: Shipping picks: A word to the wise...

Same thing happened to me mailing a casein EML pick (same material as Red Bear). That material is definitely fragile.

    Re: I Hate Playing Chords

I used to think that A barre chord was really difficult, and same with the thumb - I was never sure if it should be around the back of the neck like a classical guitarist (it shouldn't) or if I could...

    Re: D'Addario picks?

Yeah, casein is very fragile, and sensitive to water/moisture. I don't think it would survive a trip through the washing machine. I trade picks on the classifieds quite a bit (mostly BC picks) and...

    Re: Finger joint fusion?

Stem cell injections could be worth looking into. Experimental and costly, so it would be a gamble. I live in the world of uber athletes who perform well into their 80s (I'm not one of them, mind...
  22. Re: Hand position, and proper way to wear a strap?

Yes, thanks for bringing this up. In that same Mike Marshall video (not the YouTube video but the DVD from which that is taken - which I have), Mike says that all these "rules" go out the window...

    Re: Strap Button Recommendations

I got mine from Elderly Instruments. It was pretty inexpensive, but looks nice and is low profile. It's stainless steel or some kind of metal. They had a few different options. I installed myself...
  24. Re: Hand position, and proper way to wear a strap?

Just a clarification, if you let go with both hands, then yes the peghead of the mandolin will drop - especially an F-style because they are heavier towards the head compared to an A-style. But you...
  25. Re: Hand position, and proper way to wear a strap?

Here you go. This explains it all. When you're standing, you'll need to figure out something different to keep the mandolin in place, but you don't do it by holding the mandolin up with the left...
