    Re: Alt. tuning and intonation

I hadn’t thought about slack key but I was thinking about gcea or dgbe. I’m about equally comfortable mando or guitar/uke tuning. So I thought I’d have one mando in reg fifths tuning but another...

    Re: Alt. tuning and intonation

Thanks, for the info. Was thinking about a second mando to try some alternate tunings (keeping my good mando in GDAE). Wouldn’t bother tho, if poor intonation was likely.

    Alt. tuning and intonation

I don’t know the science behind these things but does it throw off intonation when you use an alternate tuning on your mandolin? I understand you need to select the proper gauge string to get the...

    Re: Pick guard replacement

LOL, I really like the Martin but it is certainly a player not a collector. I did wind up ordering the tortoise, as I’ve always been a fan (like sunburst finishes).

    Re: Pick guard replacement

Thanks for the info. It’s a ‘71, so black plastic would be the ticket. The wood piece was painted black, probably to copy the original that needed replacement.

    Re: Pick guard replacement

I was surprised to find that the pick guard was wood when I removed it. I saved it to use as a template, just in case I had to DIY one. I was just hoping a nicer one was available already made. I...

    Re: Pick guard replacement

Wish I was that handy. This one is more of a eater than a beauty, but I would still like her to have something simple and tasteful to wear to cover up her tan lines.

That’s what I’ll do if I can’t locate something nicer. It is an odd shape to find. Thanks for the suggestion guys.

    Pick guard replacement

Picked up an old Martin flat top oval hole mando with a dried, curled up pickguard. Gonna have to take it off and replace it. Any have any idea about where to find a replacement?

    Re: Mid-MO value

Thank for all the responses. Now I just have to decide if I’m gonna sell the mid-mo or my US Breedlove quartz. I’m downsizing from house to apt. and have too many instruments for such a small space....

    Re: Mid-MO value

Thanks Southern Man. I did check Big Muddy site for new price, but had now idea what an old one would go for nowadays. I had no recollection of what I had paid. When I looked for comps, I couldn’t...

    Mid-MO value

I’m trying to get an idea of the value of a M-4 Mid-Mo. I searched around but can’t seem to find any currently for comparison. I figured the knowledgeable folks here could help me. Thanks for any...

    Re: The shipping problem

I’ve used them twice for guitars (all in the past year) and once for a non-guitar item (large canvas art) and they were significantly cheaper than going directly thru USPS/UPS/FEDEX and I had no...
  15. Re: Question for pickers who play BOTH mandolin and guitar

Wow! Exact same thing happened to me. Starting with that same technique (root on finger 1, finger 2 on lower 5) and then just following the pentatonic scale from there, I started to be able to easily...

Re: Is It Possible to Fake It?

Sherry, I wish I could hear your mp3 but all I get is a bunch of code but from comments it seems like your improv was successful. Great! Just wanted to mention what helps me get a new song (or less...

Re: Is It Possible to Fake It?

Funny, but when Mandocrucian mentions “Sultans of Swing”, it mades me think of an interview I saw with Mark Knopfler. He tells how he came home from a gig and his wife sensed he was a little down....

Re: Is It Possible to Fake It?

I don’t know if this would be considered “faking it” but I don’t ever have a pre-loaded solo in my head for a jam but I do practice playing lead with recordings and also check out what others have...

    Re: Mandolin in the Hospital???

Sherry, I have a little soprano uke tuned GDAE for such occasions. Makes for nice, quiet, mando-like noodling.

I don’t want anyone to construe my comments about Lakota straps as criticism. I not only have several but have given them as gifts to my kids. They are my favorite straps. Super soft and comfy from...

Or get a six pack of Grolsch beer and get 6 washers for free. Tea totalers can find something similar in the hardware store.

I use a rubber washer as well. The leather is strong but soft and can easily slip off.
