    Re: Amplifier for electric mandolin

I use a ZT Lunchbox and extension speaker. Works really well for a clean sound, good with a drive pedal.

    Re: Budget Mandocello

Tell you what Martin, I'll pop my 58cm 10 string in the car next week and you'll be able to hear why the shorter scale isn't ideal. I use custom wound heavy core Headways on the low C and it's still...

    Re: Ashbury Lindisfarne

Not mine. Still a good instrument, but I did have to have a new bridge plate fitted in order to cure the intonation on the a string which was almost, but not quite, in tune.
  5. Re: Suggestions for Good Microphone for Acoustic Group

Depends on the size of the room you're trying to fill. In a small room, just close mic the mandolin through a small amp. In a medium to large room then, pick up on the mandolin, electronic piano, mic...

Re: Speaker size for 4-string emando amplifier

I used a Line 6 Flextone with 30cm speaker for a long time. Mostly I used the Fender Tweed emulations for less noise. Then I switched to a ZT Lunchbox and extension with 15cm speaker. It was great...
  7. Re: UK Luthier to build 4 String Solid Body Electric Mandolin

You could try Tomson guitars in Wigan. My 10 string is on his website, so is a small Telecaster.

Re: Bill Bailey has taught himself Mandola

It's what you get used to on fret markers. My mandolins and mandolas have all had the ninth fret dot. Got a Breedlove with a tenth fret dot and have had to cover it to avoid my confusion.

    Re: Mystery Electric

It reminds me of a UK maker, Chris Eccleshaw from Stoke, in shape and plck up. I played one once in a shop in Galway. However, it only reminds me of it and the initial is wrong obviously.

    Re: DiMarzio recommendations please?

I've used Schaller Strat sized bladed Humbuckers on my 5 course Mandocellocaster since it was built 20 odd years ago. They work really well: great sustain and good tone tapped or untapped. They have...

Re: Seeking a bridge pickup for my Eastman 515

I'm very happy with my Fishman M200 on a Breedlove OF. I use it straight into a Trace Acoustic or into the PA using an Ashdown pre amp Di. Good for volume, but I do use a Mooer Woodverb reverb and a...
  14. Re: Octave Mandolin question: Teardrop versus mando-guitar?

I play a guitar shaped Ashbury Lindisfarne and find the tone to be quite round with good sustain. It will not cut through guitars etc like a long necked Bouzouki, tending to get buried in the mix...

Re: help me build a pick set

Thanks for that, I've never thought of my Breedlove sounding like a banjo. I'll have a try with a few mm more when we can go to shops again.

Re: help me build a pick set

This is a genuine question. Since I normally use the same pick, small Dunlop 60, on the Breedlove of, the Fylde flat top and the octave mandola how might a pick upgrade improve my tone? Also will...

Re: help me build a pick set

This is very interesting. I'd never really considered having a variety of plectrums. I've used the Dunlop teardrop 60mm on mandolin and octave mandola for years. I suspect it's because I'm a...
  18. Re: Are Thomastik-Infeld Strings That much Better?

I have found that Newtone.strings in the UK are great for Octave Mandola. If you submit your scale length and desired gauges he will custom make your sets. Excellent sound, excellent service, good...

Re: Emando players: What do you want in an amp?

What I want from an amp?
The car unloaded in one journey. Very light. Good tone. Ease of use every time. Loud enough for small gigs. Balanced Di for larger gigs. Happy with effects pedals. Able to...

Re: Fylde Octavius mandolin string gauge?

Are we all discussing the same instrument? I suspect that some comments are about the Octavius Bouzouki and not the little Octavius mandolin. 11 to 40 mediums would seem to be OK, but a 52 on the...

Re: Fylde Octavius mandolin string gauge?

I've used the J74s for many years on my 37 year old Octavius. Did try Redwoods a while ago, but went back to the J74s. They are bright and project well enough. It is, after all quite a quiet...
  22. Re: Micing my Farmers Market/Retirement Home Bluegrass band

I’d also have a plan C which would be to have as many instruments as possible having the option of using pick ups with good pre amps, and to avoid wires, transmitters. We’ve just started to use the X...
  23. Re: Small speakers revisited, and we have a new winner: Sony XB-2

In my experience, for both electric mandolin and mandola, the winner is the ZT Lunchbox. I use one at home and for gigging, with the extension speaker. It sounds good and is very portable. The new...

    Re: Favourite overdrive?

No. Funnily enough I thought of a weak link in the chain, so I tried just a battery powered Boss SD1 on it's own with good cables and hiss was evident.
