    Re: Decent Blue Star Price

These are very nice. For many many years I've had a 5-string Blue Star, custom modified with two pick-ups. Gotta check it out again.

Re: A-Style or F-Style: Cost vs. Acoustics

It's people who are different. Some pursue a single goal. Others pursue variety. It's important for us to realize there is this difference.

    Re: can string affect tone?

It's extremely interesting to change mandolin strings. Best and worst isn't a worry. The changes are fun.
  4. Re: Why fretted instruments can never be in perfect tune in all k

The word "perfect" shouldn't be used.
It's interesting that you specified the strings' harmonicity from 1.00000 up 2.000000. When we tune, there's also the string's internal harmonicity. Also, the...

    Re: I need an Amp

I just learned about modifying the Carvin Vintage 16 amp from www.hasserl.com Seems to be an interesting website. I've no clue yet how much it'll cost to modifiy an amp.

Re: Schwab needs a replacement case

I'd like to find a hardshell case to protect my 5-string Schwab solid-body emando. The Blue Heron cases seem nice, but they're too soft. I want a hard case. Something built sturdy but lightweight...

    Schwab needs a replacement case

I'd like to find a replacement case completely different than my Schwab's original. I want to avoid all of the foam from touching the emando's finish. A rectangular shape takes up too much space from...

    Re: My NICE mandolin?

I recently began playing my Phoenix Jazz on a dual pre-amp that plays into a tube amp. Amazing how identical sounding are the Jazz's two channels.

    Re: I need an Amp

Seems to me the Carvin's "soak" knob provides the same thing as the Blues Jr.'s "master" knob. I've grown to like amps with just one volume knob. Effects pedals do more when needed.

Re: Pair of 1980s Schwab Deluxe 5-string electrics

Classic Schwabs! Give me a few days to get home and I'll post a photo of my three.
I've been curious to hear how the Semour-Duncan pick-ups sound compared to the pick-ups in current use. (Can't...

Re: What kind of strings to use?

I recommend trying the same brand and model of strings the second time around; hopefully FW74's. Sticking with the same string the second time around will help you learn the feeling between old and...
  13. Re: Better for Skill Development: GDAE Only or GDAE + CGDA?

I'm terrible. I learned reading music so that it tells me which finger to use and where to place it. For me, printed music is like a code. It can show me to use my middle finger at the third fret on...

    Re: The Brentrup Mandolin Registry

Mine is the Model 20 Proto. Number 50337-I. It's an A-style, oval hole with the more modern raised neck meeting the body at the 12th fret. I do believe this mandolin is the prototype of this model....

    Re: Mandola: New or Vintage?

    Don,
Your DAEB tuning has struck me as useful too. I like playing a 4-string solid-body emando with a 14-1/2" scale tuned CGDA with extremely light strings for bending. By mistake a couple times I...

I take the same precaution with my arm that Joni describes. After scratching a mandolin years ago, the arm precaution she describes is beneficial to learn.

    Re: Mandola: New or Vintage?

    Re: Case Lids Causing Scrapes

The type of case is not the issue, and I'm describing my own mistake. A mistake that other's can do too if the case weren't designed to prevent it.

    Case Lids Causing Scrapes

Almost all of my cases are TKL (and I like them) but one "fault" with all similar cases occurs when the lid falls shut when the instrument hasn't reached all the way inside. Either the top or bottom...

    Re: Buffed and unbuffed picks

The metal string is so much harder than a plastic pick, the pick's original finish will last only for minutes. Or maybe I'm not very sensitive.
