    Re: Reduce costs pleased

If the price of mandolins is what the economy hinges on, we're in big trouble. :))

In seriousness, I think there are going to be more instruments being offered up for sale on the used market...

    Re: Recommendation for an electric?

I am a fan of the Epiphone Mandobird 4. Especially if you upgrade the pickup with an Almuse.
Looks like that one is located in France, so shipping might not be cheap.

    Re: Used Gibsons

There really is no substitute to playing instruments side by side to get an idea of which you like better. I think the best idea is to travel to a good shop with many to choose from and try them. If...

    Re: Mandobird revisited

I owned a gold Mandobird IV about 15 years ago. Ended up selling it when I moved.
Saw a sunburst Mandobird IV on CL about 6 months ago and bought it. It had been well setup and upgraded with better...

    Re: For $300....would you?

Yes I would. That's a good price on the KM-505 and it is a good upgrade from the KM-150.
KM-505 has Radiused ebony fretboard and bridge
KM-150 has flat rosewood fretboard and bridge

    KM-505 has...

    Re: Improvising

There are many great performers who build solos long before the performance and many who build them on the spot, and many more who do some of both. The key to any of these is developing fluency in...

    Re: Improvising

I think Dawg is spot on. To me, improvisation is actually spontaneous composition. Using the tools that one has practiced for a long time to compose, real time, a melody over the running changes....

    Re: Eastman 815 replacement tuners

As long as it is a major maker, they should be the same for the posts, but best to measure just in case.
Most versions of the MD-815 have "worm under" tuners, so that is the type you will need to...

Re: Transposing tunes composed for horns

I play mandolin in a string swing jazz band. Our lineup is upright bass, guitar, mandolin, violin, clarinet. We often have 2 or 3 instruments "soloing" at the same time. Usually mandolin, violin &...

Re: Transposing tunes composed for horns

If you're playing jazz, you're going to have to learn to play in those keys. A few reasons, a bunch of the repertoire is recorded in those keys and transcribed in those keys. If you're going to jam...
  18. Re: Question about 'hybrid' mandolins in old time

Older traditional oval hole mandolins have a shorter neck that attaches to the body at the 12th fret (or sometimes even shorter). Also those mandolins usually have the fretboard attached directly to...

    Re: cheap external pickup

The stick on external pickups are not great.
I'd go with the JJB Mercato that has a carpenter jack. Install the pickups with blu-tack and you'll be good to go, no drilling required and easily...

    What's the scale length?

It can easily be setup as an octave mandolin. It may not be ideal scale length, but you're already 3/4 of the way there.

Re: My KM 1050 vs other Mandos
