    Re: Thumb Pain

After reading this I played a bit and observed myself. My thumb is all over the place. It jumps around for different chord shapes and runs. It can do that because it doesn't support the neck much. I...

    Re: Pick orientation to strings

By angling the pick upwards do you mean pulling upwards on the string before letting it go rather than straight across or down?...makes a bit of pop.

    Re: Amplification

Haven't seen much about the actual amplification. To get good sound from an acoustic instrument you need a high quality, full range monitor.

    Re: Mandolin in the Hospital???

As a guitar player, much of my motive for getting a mandolin was to have an instrument I could play while flat on my back.

Re: Thumb wear on the neck

I'm using an unfinished, roasted maple neck on my strat type guitar which I play allot. It's by far my favorite neck surface. No stickyness. Clean it with a 3M pad.

    Re: Absolute Silence

I've been playing allot watching subtitled French cop shows. I can hear the gunshots, screeching tires and all and if I want to understand the dialog I read it. Get your husband to turn on closed...

    Re: Absolute Silence

I'd think you need the same strings and tension practicing as you would when you want to be heard. I grew up playing a solid body guitar, unamplified so the parents didn't hear it and that's about as...

    Re: Artistworks question

As a guitar player learning mandolin I like the Mike Marshall lessons allot. He's a good teacher and comes across as a real good guy. The learning curve is probably pretty steep, though I've skipped...

Re: Help with mandola strings pls

If the string rests on the tuner side of the nut due to the angle it's filed when you fret the string at say the first fret you are making more of a jump distance wise than the other strings if they...

Re: Dialing in live sound-monitors, mics etc

If you don't like your sound in the monitor but you like it through the mains then you need a new monitor or monitor EQ. A front floor monitor can't help but have your instrument and it's mic/pickup...

    Re: Senheiser e609

It has a real tight pattern. Hopefully you mean to pick up just mandolin and not the rest of the band. Stay as close to it as you can. You might practice a bit by yourself to see where the pattern is...

Re: Sound Reinforcement Mandolin to Computer

You need something like an M-Audio analog to digital box. The XLR plugs in the front and USB comes out the back. There are many sorts of these around. Mine's at least a decade old and works fine but...

Re: Pick thickness - how to choose?

How about these "neopolitan" picks..long and thin. I'd try one if I knew where to get it. I saw a clip of some serious chord tremolo on a bowlback with one, guy held it like a pencil.
    Any opinions...

Re: Pick thickness - how to choose?

I've been going crazy with this since getting a mandolin a couple of months ago. I am a thumb style blues/jazz guitar player. I'd sometimes use a pick when having callus problems so I'm familiar....
