    Re: Cheapest “Good” Mandolin?

    My current mandolin, a c. 1965 Harmony Monterey H410.

I purchased it (for around $200?) from a luthier who had built and installed a new custom fitted, non-adjustable ebonized maple bridge for the...

    Re: Under $300

I'm going to cast a vote for a 1960s era Harmony Monterey H410 A-Style mandolin. These have all solid wood construction (Birch soundboard, sides, & back) with mahogany necks. They turn up for sale on...

Excellent thread. I always enjoy being reminded of all the great, unsung players out there. I'll add a few of my personal favorites for inclusion here, whom I do not think have been mentioned yet:

    Re: Loprinzi mandolin?

Hi Tim. I have never seen a LoPrinzi mandolin in person, but I am sure I remember seeing an old thread or two here on the Cafe about them.

I have no idea what that '68 A-style would be worth, but...

Re: Which strings do ya prefer?

GHS A260 phosphor bronze Bobby Osborne Signature strings (med light 11-38). Great tone, volume, feel, consistency, string life, and they provide equal string tension across the courses.

    +1 on Red-Eye.

I'd recommend the Fire-Eye Red-Eye (single channel) with the stomp box tuner pedal of your choice run through the effects loop of the Red-Eye to give you the mute capability. Your...

Might the last three numbers be "410"? Does it look like any of these (from Harmony's 1967 catalog)?

    Re: GHS Americana strings

Outstanding feel, tone and longevity. Plus, the strings have almost equal tension, which I think is beneficial for tone production on floating bridge instruments. Highly recommended. YMMV.

    Re: GHS Americana strings

Thanks Doug. My "go to" strings are the GHS A260 Bobby Osbornes (love the gauges and feel), but I was thinking about trying the Americanas. Since things ain't broke, I'll likely not try to fix them!
