    Re: technique

Maybe the paraphrase should be, one can't have too much technique in reserve, but in some instances, not appropriate to deliver it every time.
Somebody told Vince Gill on his first studio gig, "...

Re: Home Recording Setup for Total Beginner?

I have a Fostex MR8, with nice mikes, etc. Really haven't used it for years. The modern smartphone has enough quality for me. No, it's not press-ready recordings. But anything good comes through...
  3. Re: WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals...

I don't know if i'm being bated or triggered? I'm too stupid to tell. Oh BTW, i've got at least two of these MF mandolins. What if i lent them to students? Not saying i did. Asking for somebody else.

    Re: How to remember tunes?

I'm not saying it's easy, but if you can play what you hum, you don't really have to remember much, depending upon one's repertiore. I mostly play old Country and some Bluegrass. I don't know what...

    Re: Key of Bb

I consider myself more of a theory dweeb. Heavy on the chord theory. Light on the notation. 😊

Re: Amplification as a learning tool

I have a pickup on all my acoustic instruments. Mandolin, fiddle, banjer, & guitar. I run through a micro-cube. I use it like a monitor. For sure it helps to get the sound in front of you. The cube...
  7. Re: The merciless camera (recording ourselves as a reality check)

Another type of skill/game to play, is "first take." Or figure out how to get the best you can with the first take. This is the more closer to a performance, i feel. I've often said, the good stuff...
  8. Re: The merciless camera (recording ourselves as a reality check)

I think early on, in the journey recording is a great idea. But eventually i had to stop. I nit-pick everything apart, and it sometimes made me nausious just listening to myself. I instead started...

    Re: Eddie Van Halen RIP

Disceptively skilled. Watch out for those guys that make it look easy.
  10. Re: What do you do when you're Just. Not. Feeling it?

I'm not much of a gadet guy, but i got a looper. It seemed somehow more organic than just a recorder. But that's really what it is. Lay down a guitar track, and play along. Recently learning electric...
  11. Re: mass produced instruments & size variations

My other mandolins don't fit in my Eastman case. Tells me Eastman (F) body's are smaller.

I think maybe now with the advent of new CPAP cleaners i might just try the pipes. . . . . Naw
  13. Re: Getting better at Mandolin by Playing other Instruments

There ya go. Every instrument fits in the "band" in it's own place. Lot's of fun sitting in the different seats. It's like you hear it afresh.

    Re: Timing issues

Monroe's Mule Skinner Blues. "Juss keep a boom-chuck going, and you change when i change." I imagine this to be the directions given by Mr. Bill, if any directions were given.

    Re: If you jam . . . .

Just a moment. Most of the songs and tunes one will face in a jam have only two orthree chords. The root, the 4th(IV), and the 5th(V). Hundreds of songs/tunes. IOW, if you know the key, the first...

  19. Re: What Do You Use for Editing Standard Notation

I like Finale too. Never really worked with anything similar. I like once one declares a time signature, it won't let you cheat. Don't know if any other apps work like this?

    Re: Can you teach musicality?

Remember those Lowry organs? They virtually made the music for you. (Yeah right) Advetised, as anybody can make music. Nope. Wrong.

I like the pretext that, a teacher can teach until blue in the...
  24. Re: APM cancels Live From Here amid other layoffs and cuts

So Chris didn't even realize it was thier last show? That must be the dark side of showbiz. Good candidate for a podcast. Be the master of your own domain.
  25. Re: Learn to play multiple instruments at once?

I learned mandolin and fiddle pretty much at tthe same time. Tuning is the same, but a bow is not a pick. Fiddle technique is a bit demanding, so it sadly dominated. Banjer and guitar are departures...
