    Re: Carbon Fiber Mandolin

I would be very interested in a affordable carbon fiber mandolin if the tone and playability are solid. Would love a durable regular size/scale A shape with ether F or oval hole for the sailboat.
  2. Re: Tuner that works for setting intonation?

Thanks for the heads up. I am up on MDI and don't make it down that way too frequently.
  3. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

They made some threats to local builder over his SG like shapes (and V) last year. Just a cease and desist letter and not a suit. Best I can tell he is still making them (looking at his site),...
  4. Re: Tuner that works for setting intonation?

Certainly simple options and ears can all work, but I will also put a plug in for my trusty old Sonic Research ST122 chromatic strobe tuner. Unfortunately Sonic Research only makes pedal versions...
  5. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

I don't have much to add to the discussion other than this reminds me why I don't own any instruments from legacy brands like Gibson. If I had the money, I might "play authentic" as Mr. Agnesi...
  6. Re: Joining the Girouard club - commissioned a build!

The Girouard is looking great Gary. I promise to take good care of the MTO once it arrives here in Maine.

    Re: Music Streaming service question...

I had never really thought about it, but I have an Amazon unlimited account primarily for my daughter and there appears to be quite a lot of anything I can think to search for. Not sure how it...
  8. Re: D'Addario - Seeking Mandolin Beta Testers

So far I am liking the beta strings. I have mostly been using Elixir Mediums for as long as I can remember, and usually can't tolerate the break in period for J74's (to bright for me). These sound...

I was only able to take in the first half, but I thought it was excellent.

    Re: A style suspension answer

I have had mandos with soft leather used in a similar fashion for many years (as in upwards of 10), and I have yet to detect even a hint of wear on the finish.
  13. Re: Sarah Jarosz uses Elixir Nanowebs....anybody like them????

Elixir are pretty much all I have used since switching from TI's about ten years ago. I quite like them on my mandolins, both for tone and feel. Pretty subjective stuff, so all you can do is try...
  14. Re: Open mind, open wallet, about Blue Chip picks

Have fun with it. Unhappy is a bit strong of a descriptor. I certainly had fun testing them out, otherwise I would not have tried a few. In all cases there were good traits, but after the initial...
  15. Re: Open mind, open wallet, about Blue Chip picks

I think my standard is a Wegen M200. Thick and fairly blunt all all three points. Something about that material works for me.
  16. Re: Open mind, open wallet, about Blue Chip picks

All I can say is that your mileage may vary. I have owned three BC picks, and have given (yes given) all three away. The new owners are thrilled, but I was never happy with the tone I got or feel...

    Re: Changing strings

Good point on removal. Even sitting at the kitchen table with all kinds of light, the locked version can be a bit tedious to get off the post. The wound strings in particular grip right to the...

    Re: Changing strings

The method I am thinking of and have seen has all of the wraps and then the kink at the post (such as Taylor Guitar Link). The extra turns offer opportunity for the string to move or change tension...

    Re: Changing strings

Interesting. I just tested that out on my guitar (did three of each method) and it took me at least three times as long to do the wrapping method, which makes sense to me because there were 3-5 more...

    Re: Changing strings

Changing strings isn't a big deal. I will also give a thumbs up for the method depicted at frets.com, which is to say, locking the string under itself on the post and using very few wraps. I have...

    Re: Crashed Hard Drive

Not that it helps your current situation, but 1TB USB 3.0 external drives are down to $60 or less these days. It has never been cheaper to backup. Also, many newer routers will allow you to add a...

Wonderful, I will add this to my must get list. I have seen Darol and Joe play together with different bad members twice, and both times they were outstanding.
