Re: Info on J. Bovier mandolins, please

I bought a J Bovier off of Reverb last year and like you I was interested in the background. Per a recommendation here I contact Jeff Cowherd via email, gave him the serial number and he gave me...

Re: economical option to record myself

Martin, this is exactly what I want to do. I did the click track test and I came up with 1142 milliseconds. That seems like lot. I used the normal speakers on my desktop to play the click track...

Re: economical option to record myself

I did not know much about the Zoom recorder so I spent some time looking into it. It seems more capable than I expected. Just ordered a H1N

Re: economical option to record myself

That a bit too low-fi. Right now I am using a cheap eBay mic that plugs into me sound card. The quality just isn't good enough even for my needs

    economical option to record myself

Looking for an inexpensive option to record myself to assess progress. I would just be recording mandolin and maybe a guitar backing track. I plan to use Audacity but need a decent microphone. I...

    Re: Merry Christmas

Hope everyone had a Happy Holiday. I only got one mandolin related item, a Celtic Mandolin book from my daughter. My wife surprised me with a Cigar Box 3-string slide guitar. It's fine to goof...
  7. Re: Position available in full-time touring bluegrass band.

Damn, they always go for the banjo player
  8. Re: Position available in full-time touring bluegrass band.

I'd do it but the bluegrass groupie girls wear me out!
  9. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

Bluegrass Junction went off the air for two full weeks, and there was not a single apocalyptic Roland Emmerich-type catastrophe
  10. Re: I put new strings on and positioned the bridge myself

I think "loathe" is a good word to use to describe how I feel about changing strings (and washing the car and mowing the lawn), but, I do enjoy how the mandolin sounds after new strings
  11. Re: I put new strings on and positioned the bridge myself

I really, really despise changing my strings, but after 3 months or so I finally break down force myself to change them. 3 years is a whole new level of procrastination

Re: Picked up a fiddle recently..

Imagine how much more you would play your mandolin if you had picked up a banjo!
  13. Re: Where do all the Mandolin Cafe decals end up?

Mine is on the back of my car

    Re: Rockin' the Dulcimer!

The Ramones on a dulcimer. Makes perfect sense
  15. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

Bait and switch? Really? That seems a bit strong. I am not sure all that aggravation was worth $7.50 but it seems to me that Sirius customer service took care of you

    Re: Natural talent vs practice

I think this is a great thread. I am firmly in the camp that you need innate talent to be really exceptional at something. We tell our kids that they can do anything if they put their minds to it...

    Re: The Kentucky

I have a KM-250 that I bought from the classifieds here at the Cafe. Very impressed with the sound and quality at that price point. I do find the finish a bit cheap looking but that is my only...

    Re: Subscription Tutorial Sites

I agree with that. I ended up recording the audio and then using Music Speed Changer (similar to the Amazing Slow Downer) to loop and slow down the audio. Sharon's course pushes learning tunes by...
  19. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

My understanding is that in some cities Sirius has ground station broadcast which should be comparable to old school radio. My Sirius receiver gives a signal level for both satellite and terrestrial...
  20. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

They recently changed their policy. They no provide a basic online subscription for "free". Note that Sirius bought Pandora so I expect them to provide more online offering in the future. I love my...

Re: Maybe it's just me...but I like this

I agree with you. Its not just because I am not fast; I don't really enjoy bluegrass mandolin played so fast you can't pick out the melody. I guess some equate speed with virtuosity, but I like my...

I found the book, video instruction and audio tracks to offer a lot of content. Bert gets right to the point. There is a nice progression of arrangements of standard bluegrass songs. I like having...

    Re: Beginner

My feedback. I've been playing for about year but I consider myself a beginner. I used Peghead nation for several months. I learned to play many songs by ear but the shortcoming for me was there...
