  1. Music and Nature Videos - Sobell Banjo Lute and Flute

I have a mid-1980s Sobell 10-string cittern that I swap back and forth from 10-string fifth's tuning, to five strings (in 5-string banjo orientation). So, going from a mando instrument to a banjola...

    Re: Double Standard

How to start an argument on the internet: 1) express an opinion; 2) wait. If there weren't opinions in both directions on every topic, there wouldn't be much to discuss and there might not be so much...
  3. Re: Carlo Munier (1906): Mazurka Allegra (with score)

This piece is another of Munier's mazurkas that I have now revisited in lockdown (after "Mazurka sentimentale"). Since my earlier 2015 recording, a better scan of the same published score has...

  5. Re: The mandolin is more than just a folk instrument

Since I took up the mandolin and started perusing this forum, I have not only learned about so much music I never knew about, but also was reminded of things I haven't listened to in years and years...
  6. Re: What Do You Use for Editing Standard Notation

I use Musescore 3. Like JL277z said, all the instructions are out there, just finding it is the tough part. Took me the devil of a time to transcribe a tune where there was one short measure at the...

  8. Re: i am having problems with "clefs" again. Treble or alto

There are many ways to understand music notation. One can get lost when there are so many variables. So it is important to define your situation and your tactics.

In my case I often become like a...

  12. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

I would push back against this, at least a little. I don't think it has anything to do with employing lawyers or sharp business practice. On the contrary. BlueChip is simply patenting an original...
  13. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

This is a trademark claim, not a patent dispute. I think the reason this tends to irritate people is that Gibson didn't claim this and similar trademarks for decades, then after they become more or...

  15. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

I hope somebody at Gibson understands how embarrassing this is becoming. The Collings headstock is intentionally asymmetric in part to establish their own brand identity and distinguish their product...
  16. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

"I'm soooo confused!" "I bought this guitar thinking it was a Gibson, but now I find out it's a Collings!" "I guess I should have read what was on the headstock, instead of going by the shape."

    ...
  17. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

The Collings design is asymmetrical—that alone makes it different. I've seen it referred to as the "haircut" headstock, which is exactly what it looks like. Gibson needs a few less lawyers on the...
  18. Re: Gibson opposes Collings' headstock trademark registration, ci

For posteriority here's the headstock profiles under discussion. Collings on the left.

As Mike says, the one on the far right... the "open book" headstock....was closely associated with Vinaccia...

Re: Strings for Nerve Damaged Hands

I really don't have to worry about volume on my mandolin. It's a Kiso-Suzuki MR-150, and that thing is LOUD. It's a bowlback, and I'm yet to find an acoustic that matches its natural projection,...

    Re: Song books for women?

No, you don't really need to find a song book with entries in "women's keys." Besides, there ain't no such thing! A contralto will tend to sing in a completely different vocal range from a soprano,...

The first tune I learned with them was Човен хитається.

Re: Strings for Nerve Damaged Hands

I know you like D'Addario, but if they don't make a string light enough for you I would try something else. GHS makes a 9-32 which is nice and light, I use it on cant top mandolins.

We could introduce the concept of "known unknowns" vs "unknown unknowns" but even that might not show what anyone knows or doesn't know.
