Re: jams with friends during covid

Getting together once a week for several weeks now. 4 or 5 of us, outside on a porch. We stay several feet apart but are not fanatical, and don't get a tape measure out. I have personally decided...

    Re: Blue chip picks

I think only you can decide if they are worth it. Buy one and give it a try. If you don't like it there is a good market for resale.

    Re: Girouard Mandolins

What a fascinating read! Thank you for doing this.
  4. Re: Matt Miller Picks - New to the Pick Market - Great pick/price

Wonder if it is the same or similar to the BC material.
  5. Re: Gender and age distribution of mando players

Possibly the Mandolin Cafe forum is not representative of the overall gender makeup of mandolin players.

Re: Northfield is simply nailing it lately

I have a bad case of Northfield 4th gen MAS, but unlikely to happen any time soon. At the same time thankful I have the N5S.

Re: Northfield is simply nailing it lately

I think the F5S is one of the sweet spots for Northfield. A great instrument at a great price. And they seem to be selling a ton of them. Northfield is so much more than simply an Asian knock-off...

Re: Are All Lloyd Loars Dropping In Price?

The 'asking' vs. the actual sale prices for these Loar F5s are likely very different. And it is much more difficult to determine the actual price paid since most buyers and sellers would prefer to...

Re: What do you use to lube your tuners?

I occasionally use a bit of high quality synthetic key oil marketed for woodwind and brass instruments. It has a needle applicator so I can get it exactly where it needs to go.

    Re: Capo for Octave/Bouzouki

Thanks for this recommendation! I got one for my Mendel OM with 1 11/32" nut width and it also fits perfectly. I love the low profile and the ability to dial in the tension.

    Re: Mandolin discounts?

I've seen some, mainly used, being discounted on retail sites. I think that for new instruments the manufacturer often specifies the MSRP and the retailer must respect that price. BTW, I own an...
  13. Re: I have read other threads and i am still confused- newbie man

Here is a nice presentation on a very basic vs. step-up vs. high end. If you can swing the step-up you will have an instrument that will take you much further down the road.

Re: I Wish I Were An Electrician!

But what he is asking for is much more than simply solar panels, inverters, and if you want to be truly off-grid, battery storage. He is also asking for a complete re-wire of his home. If you want...

    Re: Shelter-in-place (NMC)

For laughs (and I'm needing a lot of those right now):
    * Seinfeld reruns
    * Going through the entire "Reno 911" series.

    For sanity:
    * NO social media (except a little Instagram that is music and...
  18. Re: We Lost A Great One - RIP Ellis Marsalis

Very sad news. Ellis was the definition of class and had a huge and positive impact on so many musicians.

    Re: Informal Poll

Sometimes I tell myself, just get what makes you happy as no one knows what tomorrow will bring. That said, I'm very happy at the moment with what I have. So I'd say no. OTOH, I'm trying to figure...

  22. Re: To the multi instrumentalists: which instrument is your no. 1

Started on clarinet at age 9, and still consider it my best instrument. Started adding other woodwinds (sax/flute/oboe). All of which I still play (except the oboe).
Picked up a mandolin when I...

    Re: Northfield Recurve Case

I have one of these with my N5S. Overall I like the case, though a few negatives IMO. The storage area is small. A set of strings in packaging will not lie flat, though it will fit at an angle. ...

    Re: No more EXP74's?

I'm just trying a set of EXP74CMs for the first time. I really like the sound and they seem to hold up well. I do find that the coating makes it difficult for me to slide on the G and D strings. ...
