Re: Advice for newbie in SC

I've met a few great pickers and awesome people from Charleston by going to the Alan Bibey camp at Myrtle Beach. You should definitely look into that for next August!
  3. Re: Article: Guess the Mandolin Dawg is Playing, Win $100 Gift Ce

very cool idea, thanks Dawg and the Cafe!
Put in my guesses, but I have to say it was very difficult to choose on some of them. Some I felt confident, but they all sound great!

    Re: Heiden vs Northfield GOM

I'm really happy with my flat top Northfield octave, but I don't have a lot of experience playing others either. I guess you're comparing the archtop since it was 4k. I played them both and preferred...

  8. Re: Alan Bibey is 2019 IBMA Mandolin Player of Year

    Amen, FINALLY!!
This was always one of the biggest things I pointed to when I complained about the list of previous winners. So happy for Alan, very very well deserved and long overdue!
  9. New music from Mike Marshall/Darol Anger

I guess this is the right place since it has newgrass in the forum label, maybe not. No claims this is bluegrass before somebody has a fit! :))

Mike Marshall and Darol Anger just put out a new...

Re: D'Addario Strings - Ask Us Anything

I'm betting Kyle intended this to a short run thread and didn't expect to be answering questions 6 months later or for the rest of his life LOL.
  11. Re: Please talk about your experience with the Mandola.

I bought an Eastman mandola several years ago. It's a decent instrument but I really have not done very much with it at all. I learned a few tunes and I have played it on I think ONE gig, ONE song....

    Re: XT D'Addario Mandolin Strings?

I have played several sets of the Monels and i like them a lot. Unlike you, I haven't totally decided whether I like them better than the Martin monels or not yet. Maybe, but the Martins are half the...

    Re: XT D'Addario Mandolin Strings?

I usually have an obnoxious chemical reaction with phosphor bronze strings generating a gross looking green crud from both hands.
I wonder if this coating would help with that or not.

    Re: G(I) chop to 3 or 4-finger D(V) chop?

A good chop can be achieved with really only the G and D strings. I'd call it maybe 92% of what you'll get by adding the A string to it and the E string is useless in a chop as far as the sound I...

Re: A New Pick For Slick?

Basically, the mandolin is a super bright instrument and can be almost "tinny" (in general, of course each instrument is different).
Many (not all) players prefer to use a thick and more rounded...

Re: A New Pick For Slick?

Something else you may consider is trying out the more rounded corner of each of those picks as well. I think you may find a nice tone that way. Of course the definition of nicer tone varies with...

Re: A New Pick For Slick?

Try some Proplecs. About a buck a piece and you can order 12 and leave them all over the place so you don't have to worry about losing one lol.

  22. Re: F5's from $3000-5000 worth considering - Sept '19

I'll second both the Skip Kelley or any of the Northfield models. Definitely agree with Br1ck that they have very different voices, try them out!

    Re: Mandolins "Opening Up"

I think the main thing to take away is that some people believe it and some don't, which is OK, but don't spend a ton of money on an instrument that you think might get better. It might, or might...
