Re: A couple of new instruments

I am not usually a fan of F style mandolins but that one is elegant and I like it.

    Re: New Mandolin Advice request

Lyon is a budget line from whomever now owns the Washburn name. I doubt it would be better than the Rogue. A maple top is not desirable.

Re: DI Box w/ XLR IN & Mute?

If you are using a condenser mic I am not sure why you would want a DI box. The condenser mic can go straight into the board. There are a lot of mic pre-amps out there if you wanted to warm up the...
  4. Re: WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals...

Its easy to laugh when the warnings go overboard as they sometimes do. I find to many warnings far better than not enough. Some workplace practices and chemicals were extremely dangerous and little...
  5. Re: Ceccherini 10 string mandolin in Belfast, advice needed

The OP says the dip is in the fretboard. A 1 mm dip in the fretboard is just a bit of relief and isn't a problem.

    Re: Mildewed Instruments

I would suggest using a damp cloth to remove as much as possible of the visible mildew. Next I would put the instrument in a sunny well ventilated spot. Light and drier conditions will do a lot to...

    Re: Happy Anniversary Mandolin Cafe!

Happy anniversary! This is one of the best music forums out there. Notice how people with banjos and guitars come here asking questions? That is because of the unique and friendly resource that...

    Re: Guitar Center

I have gone into GC on more than one occasion planning on buying something and walked out when I couldn't get help. A friend worked there and said that people who knew what they were doing were...
  12. Re: Old, quite unique flatback. Does anyone know anything about

Given the poor fit of the tuners and the generally decent workmanship otherwise, I think the tuners are replacements.

    Re: Very strange intonation

My best guess is that the nut is cut so the contact point is at the head side of the nut rather than at the fretboard side of the nut.

Re: Could a broken truss rod cause a buzz?

Just a thought, are you always playing it in the same place? It could be a sympathetic vibration in the room.

Re: Could a broken truss rod cause a buzz?

A truss rod can cause a buzz ut it isn't all that common. You could try tightening it just a touch so as to not have an effect on the action. I would also be concerned about the possibility of a...

    Re: Two Point Mandolin

I like it. Many people suggest an A style for a first mandolin but this isn't that much more complicated.

Re: Home Recording Setup for Total Beginner?

I think all of the above recommendations will work. I would like to make the OP aware of a factor that is frequently ignored, the space you record in. It doesn't have to be an expensive studio but...

Re: Repairing and refinishing old Stradolin

I doubt you would get much selling it but you could turn it into an enjoyable instrument to play and learn about finishes on the way.
  22. Re: Improving action by sanding non adjustible bridge and reslott

As rcc56 says if the bridge fits well I would leave it along. I would suggest deepening the slots as tsheehy says and refining the top when you have it where you want it.

Re: Looking for information on a Gibson mandolin

Someone will be along shortly who knows a lot more than I do. I can tell you it is a valuable mandolin Model A "snakehead" possibly from the 1920's and it looks very clean. There should be a...

Re: 'V' neck Gibson refret advice

No. Some people like to glue in frets where the fretboard is over the body to stop from having to hammer over the body but in that case the fret slots are made bigger so the frets can be pressed in...
