    Re: Telluride bluegrass fest

Check out some of the free workshop stuff in Elk's Park. Hike up to Bridal Veil falls.

For those who can't make it (like me), you can stream it on koto.org

  3. Re: If you could have any mandolin in the world….

Since no one has claimed Reischman's Loar, I'll take that one. :)

Re: In praise of mandolin builder Matt Ruhland

We need more than one photo and one sentence about a gathering like that. ~o)
  5. Re: Praise for the contoured and rectangular Ameritage cases

My Girouard mandola came in one of those cases. I'm very impressed with it--no worries about the mandola being protected.

BTW, beautiful pair of Gavin Baird mandolins there. Exceptional mandolins.

    Re: Sunscreen and mandolin finishes

I thought you were a dental floss tycoon. Seriously though, lots of good info here. Going to some of those UV clothes. Thanks everyone!
  7. Re: Anyone Know where I can find a used Gilchrist

    Enjoy! Don builds exceptional mandolins.

    Sunscreen and mandolin finishes

Festival season is coming up. Are there any sunscreens that won't cause finish problems? Are mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide) less of a problem than chemical sunscreens?
  9. Re: Chris Thile and Michael Daves Interview - Part II

If they record again, I hope they mix it without the distortion. It was exciting at first listen, but now it's not pleasant to listen to for me.
  10. Re: Anyone Know where I can find a used Gilchrist

You have a saddle for an instrument holder? Year and voicing on the RD?

    Re: Strap button on neck?

If your left hand technique is correct, you won't notice the button in daily play. If you regularly play above the 15th fret, you might notice it.

Re: Why no narrow nut options?

I have an old left hand injury, so nut width and neck shape are critical to my ability to play at all. Before the injury, I could play most mandolins with no problem. Now, the wrong neck will set off...

Re: Man I need a good tuner...

Get the TC Electronics Unitune, or the Polytune if you have a guitar also. I've been through a bunch of tuners, and it's the best one I've found. Accurate (especially in strobe mode), battery lasts a...

Re: Why no narrow nut options?

I guess there's just a few of us who need narrow nut/slim neck mandolins and that explains why there's no narrow nut options from the makers who offer wide nut mandolins. I found a couple with necks...

    Re: Statman Fretboard Journal

Andy's playing is so unencumbered by any technical limitation and so beyond what anyone else can do with improvisation. He's definitely one of the best ever. Nice to read about his Monroe roots.

Cool story. Great detective work on the truss rod. Enjoy that fine mandolin.

Re: Mandolin sound changing over time

Can you point me to the scientific evidence that shows instruments don't change over time? I'm not aware of it.

Re: Why no narrow nut options?

I think my Heiden A5 is an outlier. It has a 1 3/32" nut and a very slim neck. With Michael's perfect setup, it plays like a dream with amazing tone. I have Passernig A5 with a 1 1/16" nut that the...

Re: Mandolin sound changing over time

While it doesn't reach the level of scientific evidence, go watch Jill's tune a week thread. First video is the mandolin at brand new. We will eventually have 52 consecutive videos one week apart to...

    Why no narrow nut options?

Makers like Collings and Northfield offer wide nut options, but no narrow nut options. For me, a 1 1/8" nut feels like a wide nut. Is there a market for narrow nuts and slim necks? Gibsons have a 1...

    Re: Del and Dawg

Dawg was playing the fern last fall when I saw him with Danny Barnes and Sam Grisman with a guest appearance by Sam Bush. The fern definitely has some cut and bite to it. Nice distressing too.
