Re: My pinky won't go where I tell it!

I've really been honing in on this myself, being honest with how cleanly I am getting to frets with all fingers. The Four Finger closed Positions (FFcP) exercises on the jazz mando site are amazing...

    Re: The Ghost Mandolin

I like it. Add a flourish of green somewhere and you've got your holiday gig axe.

    Re: DYN-M Preamp

Good to hear how OP ended up back with DYN-M. I haven't heard one up close yet but maybe one of these days I'll get to try one out.

I had (actually still have) the Radius-M and PADI. I used it...
  6. Re: New live video from Andy Statman Trio plus one.

Thanks so much for posting this here. I love the sound of that trio - gotta get to NYC one of these days to see them.

MM's are such a great resource - and just plain enjoyable to listen to. It's great to see such diverse music & musicians, to see technique and artistry on display right close up is a real treat.

    Re: I-Tone Picks

That's interesting. I've toyed with the idea of trying out the onyx one but like the ivory/white one just fine. I will say that it doesn't come as nicely polished as a BC but I don't mind doing...

    Re: Tacoma mandolins

The first mandolin I ever bought was a Tacoma M3 sunburst. I got it new just as they were coming to market. I knew I wanted to learn mandolin but at the time didn't have any frame of reference and...

Re: Whats your thought on these?

I've played and heard a number of Girouard mandolins. For a little while I was in contact to get a custom one made but didn't go through with it. My experience is that they're really good to great....

    Re: Lighter strings for beginners?

I'll echo what everyone else has said - a good setup will minimize perceived effort with both hands (and helping to relax whole body while playing). Another option is GHS makes slightly lower...

Re: Kentucky KM-1050 vs Northfield F5S

I've owned and played a handful of both brands. Different sounds and vibes but both excellent choices. That'll give you lots of instrument to grow with.

  17. Re: what strings do you recommend for a rigel mando ?

Back in the day I used to make trips to Brattleboro, VT - to the now closed Maple Leaf Music where they always had Rigel mandolins on hand. If they weren't J-74 they were certainly the same gauge.
  18. Re: String height on a mando with fingerboard extension?

I would find .080 pretty uncomfortable. A US penny is ~.060 so I use that under the 12th fret to get close to where I like. Fingerboard extension or not the action should be able to be set as you...

    Re: I-Tone Picks

I've had my I-Tone for about a year now and really find it to be a wonderful plectrum. On my A5 I prefer it to BC picks (of which I have several). On my F5 I still prefer either Wegan or a BC. It...

Re: Mid Missouri M 70 Octave

I have owned and played my M-70 since 2003. I have used it to record and played a number of gigs with it. It's been a great way to beef up the rhythm or double a melody line. It doesn't have the...
