  1. Re: Mandolin purchase advice for a new player

    1. I dare say that no mandolin is future proof, even if you do know the future.
    2. All the choices you present are what many might call "decent entry level mandolins". Some more decent than others....
  2. Re: Should I put a Mandolin Cafe Sticker on my Vintage Lifton Cas

Oops. I just dug out that case and see that it actually has two stickers. It is for a mandolin banjo, so two are appropriate if any are. Right?

I have a bunch of case stickers, only one of which is on a case. Here is where the rest reside:

    Re: New Mandolin Advice request

I would get the cheaper of the two if they are both in decent condition (nothing broken or stove in, neck straight, room on the bridge to adjust a bit up and down). You will be wanting to move up...

    Re: Hornpipe rhythm

Actually, the lady playing said fiddle, Deb Chalmers, says in one of her videos that it was indeed made by Tim Phillips. His website is https://www.timsviolins.co.uk/ .

    Re: Hornpipe rhythm

I really like that video, Doug -- for several reasons. One, I do like the tune. Two, it is very interesting to hear how she modulates volume in the middle of a note with her bowing - it really...
  9. Re: Confusing stuff in Mel Bay "Fun with Strums" book

I am surprised that the book's author does not explain these symbols, maybe in an intro. I don't think they are a part of a "standard" notation for strums (and I am not sure if there even is such an...

I am enjoying all the examples and listening to the seemingly unanimous opinion saying "it varies".:) Thanks for all the above. There seem to be some real masters in the links above.

    Hornpipe rhythm

Well, I have been enjoying Irish fiddle tunes for several years now and I understand that hornpipes are usually written in 4/4 time as a string of eighth notes which are understood to be not of equal...

Good job, Mark. I've always liked that tune since first hearing it on one of Doc's LP's. You render it nicely.

Lots of good advice here! Thanks for posing the question. And if a Song a Week is a bit ambitious due to competing priorities, the Newbies social group has a Tune a Month activity going.
