    Re: No motivation

It’s tough. And there are some really great suggestions.

May I suggest doing one of two approaches.

    1) go back to the music that first really excited you - doesn’t matter what it was. Find...
  4. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

    Great question. Terrific responses.

I picked it up around 2005. Around 2008 I realised I could play far more sophisticated music on mandolin than my first love, guitar. Like others, I still love...

    Re: Buy without trying

My two favourite solid body instruments were bought without really even seeing them. I bought them from a retailer I trust - dietze music in Nebraska - and after much discussion with ted eachlimsn...

Re: Heads up for you Mandolinists with Cats

About 2 months ago, my daughter and I found two stray kittens who had been abandoned. Attempts to get them to a welfare shelter failed, so now we have two kittens. One, Marie, is fine, but her...
  8. Re: How did the "curl" on the mandolin body evolve?

I thought wishing to inflame a situation further, do we think the curl adds or the sound? I’ve seen somewhere that it may add a bit of what might be termed compression, with that extra 10cm of air. ...
  9. Re: Sierra Hull playing as half the audience walks away.

About two months ago we found two abandoned kittens. Being white theyíre both deaf. So I can play what I want. They donít care either way.
  10. Re: How did the "curl" on the mandolin body evolve?

As a guitarist I am really a fender guy preferring telecasters. I canít get a good sound out of a Gibson. (This is my flaw not theirs). However the LES Paul is a beautiful instrument. It really is.

    Welcome to the Emando world

    Firstly - pics.

Secondly itís pretty close to going from acoustic guitar to solid body guitar. So donít necessarily start chopping away.

    Listen to a few people...

    Re: Can you teach musicality?

You can teach the techniques. You can point out where the techniques are used and who uses them. Dynamics, phrasing, playing the rests. Negative space. Harmony. Rhythm. These can all be taught.

  16. Re: Favorite Electric Mandolin Albums or Artists?

It's a hearty and full endorsement.

I interviewed Don Stiernberg (another great electric mandolinist) a couple of months back, and my feelings (and his, of course0 about the album are in here...

  19. Re: Talk me out of replacing an ABS nut with a bone nut

Acoustic. My cheaper mandos have plastic nuts. Delfin and abs so I wondered if could I get a bit more out of them.

I found none nuts 3 for 9.99 Australian at grandado. Figured I could try at that...
  20. Talk me out of replacing an ABS nut with a bone nut

Is it worth it? Will it positively affect tone or playability? Or do I just need more practice?
