    Re: Goodwill Gibson A

It depends on the seller. Some are authorities on vintage instruments with years of experience, while some are pawn shops or worse........
  2. Re: This weeks mandolin that won't get a bid or buyer

Exactly. Very different than a horn, which can be sterilized. The wood in the harmonica makes this impossible. Or, at the very least, unappealing......

something like drinking from the same...

    Re: Stew-mac prices

You might wanna try eBay for (Chinese) bone nut and saddle blanks. Sure, it takes forever, but if you order in quantities of 10, the price is about 80 cents each with free shipping. About 5 years...

Re: Estate sale find in Ohio -- maybe

I think anyone who runs estate sales for a living can look up a Martin serial number online. Pretty easy. Takes about 20 seconds. And, Martin numbers run in a logical sequence, unlike Gibson and...

Re: Estate sale find in Ohio -- maybe

It is a "his and hers" sale -- she liked crafts, rings, and purses, while he liked guitar, mandolin and dirty books................................:))

    Re: No motivation

It is OK to take some time off.

Try some yard work or planting flowers. It is fun to watch stuff grow.....

    Re: Refretting

Maybe a Dremel, I seem to use it everyday for something.....

I would say beyond the tools, which you can add to as time goes on, I would keep an open mind and know there will be challenges in...
  8. Re: Dumb and petty complaint (Doyle Lawson F-5 content)

One of my late father's corny expressions from 50 years ago was "you can't choose your color on a used car" -- I guess that would apply to other options and inherited mandolins, as well......

    And,...

    Re: Double Standard

The easiest way, believe it or not, is NOT to use the Mandolin Cafe search engine. I go straight to Google, type in what I want, and sure enough, the first result is usually the Mandolin Cafe thread...

    Re: This Gibson legit?

You can kind of approximate a mandolin sound on a regular guitar with Nashville tuning for the price of a set of strings....many online examples.

    Re: Double Standard

I'll repeat, for those who care, what I said in some of those previous posts regarding mandolin soundposts:

YES, they work as a quick & cheap means to "fix" a mandolin with a sunken top, if you...

Re: What are your go-to crowd pleasers?

I hate to say it, but it doesn't seem to have much to do with skill or ability. I find if I sing a song about being rowdy, drinkin' (too much) or partaking in other less than legal substances -- the...
  14. Re: Advice needed on shipping Gibson A-Jr to UK

My 2 cents: It's gonna be tough.

Beyond, the concerns of prohibited woods and all that, the Covid-19 restrictions have caused the shippers to limit services and raise prices of the services they...

    Re: Buy without trying

If, by the current situation, you mean pandemic restrictions/precautions, I would say not much has changed if buying by mail. Most stores are open for mail order and can send instruments to you. ...

    Re: Trouble with Top Cracks

All great advice, but first I would get some perspective about what you are trying to accomplish.

For me, I would try to save a 100 year old top before ever thinking of replacing it with "new"...

    Re: Goodwill Gibson A

It's at $751, so I'm out. My idea of a bargain is half price (preferably less) and you can get one at Carters for $1500, but this one will probably keep climbing to over that amount, so no bargain...

    Re: Bug spray Lacquer repair

On an unrelated note, as I repairman I see a high number of "grandpa's guitars" that were poorly stored for decades -- attic, garage, shed, basement, etc., -- almost ALWAYS with tiny white paint...

    Re: Bug spray Lacquer repair

Sometimes you can get lucky. Sometimes not. I would try something milder before sanding like Meguiar's Cleaner Wax in an inconspicuous area and see what happens.

    Re: Goodwill Gibson A

That is my concern, also, with Goodwill. Doubtful they have a vintage expert. Not sure if they can pack properly. What about returns? Yet, online buyers somehow think they are getting a...
