    Re: What?

Just trying to keep us safe. We are in route home from Florida and hiding out in the mountain forrests in our RV. Nearly everything closed. No use hurrying home to the Burgh with governors orders to...
  2. Re: How to play chords to sing along to?

Not rediculous! Many of us have been or still are there. I started where you are. I played in a mandolin orchestra with many accomplished players that never strummed chords. B. B. King was quoted as...

    Re: These trying times

    No way to stay!
RV camps/resorts are closing to all excepting permanent residents. We are practicing 6 foot social isolation and taking all other precautions as serious as we can. No sharing of any...

    These trying times

    No mandolin content (kind of)
Slowly making my way home from south Florida. Six days to get to north Florida. In three days we hope to be in the mountains of NE Georgia. No idea if my usual jamming...
  5. Re: A positive Cumberland Acoustic bridge story

Had a similar experience with a red wood topped mandola with a top that crashed and then was replaced by the builder with a spruce top. It had been prior to getting a new top the best sounding...

Re: Rag vs Morris vs ???

Jammed with a fellow playing a Rag at the Green Mountain Bluegrass and Roots Festival. I didn’t play it but I heard it and looked it over. Sounded good while finish was not where high end or even...

Re: Viola to mandolin or mandola

You will get lots of opinions with regards to your questions.
    1. viola to mandola likely easier transition than to mandolin as they share tuning and C clef.
    2. more learning resources available for...

Re: Looking for new F Style Mandolin

I paid $850 for a used KM 950 from the Cafe classifieds about 2 years ago. It showed no signs of having ever been played and came with original case, Cumberland Acoustic bridge, black tuning knobs,...

Re: Looking for new F Style Mandolin

Do not rule out A styles while new to mandolins. You will get more mandolin for the same money as an F style, unless you just have to have the “look” of a F style.

    Re: Round vs. pear shape

Curiosity: do these shape differences provide a different tone such as flat top vs. arch top? Or are the tonal differences impacted more by other factors?

Re: tone woods for Octave Mandolin

Good advice about picking a builder you trust. My builder built to my request for a red wood top of which he lacked experience. This resulted in him making the red wood top too thin which resulted in...

    Round vs. pear shape

I notice many of the mandolin family instruments made in Britain, Ireland, and Scotland are roundish while US instruments (A style) are more pear shaped. Any advantage tone wise for one or the other?...

Re: tone woods for Octave Mandolin

Is anyone building OMs, Dolas, or even many builders using torrified wood on f style mandolins due to fear of cracking? I think I would want a red spruce top or something that has proven itself to...

    Re: Mandolin right hand technique

    Wrist playing notes (melody).
Combination of wrist and arm playing tremelo.
    Arm strumming chords.
......and not always purely as stated but certainly mostly.

    Re: Muleskinner Mandolin Raffle!

Played Andyís mandolins at the Green Mountain Bluegrass and Roots Festival. Nice Mandolinís. I especially liked the tone of an A model he had with him comprised of (I think) sycamore.

Re: Sold my Collings and got a Pava

  21. Re: Here's why you are an amazing mandolin picker but still dumb

I wish my parents had been “tigers” forcing me to play and practice an instrument. It would have kept me from being a street wise urchin doing things that would have put me in serious trouble in...

    $350 US
