Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

Stiver, all day long. Rigel if you aren't concerned about stink eye from the Bluegrass Police. Macica (upstate NY) for an off-radar killer A style mandolin and pricing that is kind to the wallet.
  2. Re: Can anyone please share some thoughts on the Eastman MD515CC?

I have a standard 515, which I have raved about elsewhere on the Cafe. Excellent instrument, especially at the price point. My one gripe is the choice of the stock Pingwell tuning machines. I'm...

    Re: Strap Recommendation

This seems like a YMMV thing. Hasn't been the case for me on the Eastman 515. Currently have Longhollow straps on the Rigel A (this was actually Rigel branded), the 515, and the El Rey. Previously...

    Re: Strap Recommendation

Softy Longhollow. They work on A's and F's. Excellent strap.
  5. Re: "funky avocado" michael hedges @ the new varsity

Found him in the mid '80s; saw him in the early 90's in San Diego at Humphreys, and in the Village, maybe at The Bottom Line. Such an amazing performer and so humble. He evidently saw himself more a...

    Re: Favourite effects for electrics.

My fx for electric mandolin will vary from rig to rig based on the amp, and gig to gig based on the need. I pulled myself up from a pretty deep rabbit hole. These days really just running 2-3 effects...

    Re: Patriotic WW1 German Mandolin

The idea of commemorative instruments is important, even if it makes us uncomfortable. IIRC, the article about violins formerly owned by Jews killed during WW2 has made the rounds on the Cafe. FWIW,...
  8. Re: Drop-in replacements? MD-515, El Rey

    Thanks, Mike!
  9. Drop-in replacements? MD-515, El Rey

I'm interested in swapping out the Pingwell RM-1583N-26A tuners from my MD-515 and El Rey. My search on the Cafe has not revealed a slam-dunk solution so far. The Rubner's everyone raves about aren't...

Re: the Loar VS Eastman VS Kentucky

Only one brand listed offers a limited lifetime warranty on their instruments. What does that suggest?

FWIW, when I first saw the Eastmans, I thought "meh." Nowadays, I pick up the MD-515 way more...

Re: Shipping picks: A word to the wise...

Yeah, those Red Bear picks are way too fragile, especially for the price point. Shipping picks in a padded envelope with extra bubble wrap around the picks has been foolproof for me, at least so far.

Re: buying first mando without playing?

I bought my Eastman MD-515 unseen and unheard, new from The Mandolin Store on sale for just under a grand. Amazing instrument and lifetime warranty. Win-win.

Lots of fine choices on your list. A...

    Re: Eastman mandolins

I will add one caveat about the 515, and the El Rey for that matter. I find the Pingwell tuners underwhelming and will eventually upgrade them. YMMV.

    Re: Eastman mandolins

I love my 515; great sound. If I want amplified Eastman, I would go to the El Rey.

Re: Anyone seen an Eastman El Rey?

I can compare it to my Eastman 515, and state that while different necks, both are equally comfortable to me. Slight radius on the board is comfy as well.

Re: Anyone seen an Eastman El Rey?

Viola some 40+ years ago as a teen. Never guitar. Mandolin as I was getting ready to turn 40. Thank you for putting my in the top 0.1%!

I love mine. Great feel and playability, excellent tone, and the custom Lollar pickup is amazing.

Saw her in Bethesda, opening for Jake Shimabukuro. Great set, mostly from the new album.

    Re: Recommendation for an electric?

Look for a used Kentucky four stringer or a Crafter a/e (Ovation style).

Re: In case or on stand?

Context. At home, 3 (electrics) are on a triple hanging stand, one (acoustic) on a stand by itslf, and a couple in cases. At work, in case. Playing out, it depends on environment where the mando goes...

    Re: Strap recommendations?

I've been thrilled with Long Hollow Softy straps. Got my first one nearly 16 years ago for my Rigel. Mandos have come and gone but the Long Hollows stick around. I love how they can be used on...

Re: What case for my Kentucky KM500

+1 on the Travelite. Great protection, generous storage pocket inside, and the bakstrap packs are helpful "for the long haul" at festivals or gigs.
