    I'm going o go out on a limb and say that it will fit. If you go to Northfield's website they sell the James tailpiece. All 3 tailpieces (Gilchrist, James and Nugget) look to be the same hole pattern.

    Charles E. and pops1 - I always thought is as HoGo states. I'm not a luthier but I like to read and I've only seen it referred to as a mortise. That said I defer to more knowledgeable people :)
