Re: Looking for something darker and throatier

Yes, this. I once described wanting a mandolin that sounded more like a barn than a bell. I think my Carlson Flatiron A model has that, but I've heard other mandolins like Gibsons, Buckeyes, and...

Re: Andy Statman Bought A Loar F5!

This isn't really fair. First, lots of mandolin players have wear and tear on the tops of their instruments. Look up pics of Ricky Skagg's Loar and see the wear around the top of the lower soundhole....

    Re: favorite festival tent?

Thanks everyone. I'm an experienced camper and have set up many tents in my life- should'a made that clear- but haven't purchased one in a long time and was just wanting to know what other folks...

    favorite festival tent?

Hey does anybody have a festival tent they like that's for 1-3 people? That is, a smallish tent, not a big cabin-style family 4-6 person tent. Looking for one that's easy for one person to set up if...
  5. Re: What song, Album, Musician changed your perspective on music?

    Bill Monroe, Master of Bluegrass.

Blew my mind at 17. Still doing so many decades later.

    Re: Question about Collings mandolins

Building on what Jstring just said, do also remember that different instruments have very different neck and fretboard designs. I don't like the V profile of the Collings mandolins I've played (I...

    Re: Thile Update NYT

Nice article but yet another reminder that just because somebody works for a major publication it doesn't mean they know what they're talking about.

    To wit:

    He was already winning bluegrass...

While I hardly consider myself a capitalist ideologue, I think in this case, the invisible hand is going to take care of the mando market. If lots of people want luthier-level American made...

    Re: Gator GL Mandolin Case

I have a Parsons A model (long neck oval) and a Flatiron A model and they switch off between the Gator and a tweed wood case. I stuff some soft cloth in the hole where the scroll would go and that...

Re: Do you name your instruments?

Oddly enough I was just having this discussion with a friend about our bikes. I have nicknames for two of my bicycles but none of my musical instruments, or at least the ones I have at the moment. I...

Hi Glassweb, where did you buy this case? Also, does it have both backpack strap and shoulder strap options? That is, are there rings on the side with the handle for normal sideways shoulder strap...

    NMD: NOS Kentucky

Well, this was kind of an impulse purchase but I'm rather impressed. I found a NOS Kentucky KM-254 on Reverb, offered about $100 less than asking price, and shop owner gave me a gig bag and strap...

  15. Re: Ellis Deluxe Mandolin #110 - scam sales on eBay and elsewhere

I think the same scammers were advertising a Flatiron Artist F model. I looked at it and realized something was wonky when the ad said the pawnshop was going out of business- in CA- but the feedback...

Re: 11 Year Old Gibson Mandolin Endorser

Brian, I think we're in agreement. I'm just amazed the kid has a deal with Gibson at 11.

I'm 54 and I couldn't get a deal with Rover or Rogue mandolins.

They'd pay me to play some OTHER brand.

Brian, I certainly didn't say anything about pure natural ability being the only reason this young man is getting an endorsement deal at 11. I do think it's undeniable that different human beings...

    Re: Old vs New Oval

I have a beautiful archtop A-oval made by Will Parsons because I wanted a rounded neck- hate skinny V necks- and 14 rather than 12 frets like my A model Flatiron. I have no idea how it's braced but...
  21. Re: Ricky Skaggs receives Presidential Medal of the Arts.

I'm not sure I understand the popcorn GIF reaction. I'm not a troll and just posting legitimate mandolin-player news. I one thing I think most folks on this board would agree on is that Ricky Skaggs...

Go figure, but good for Ricky.

Re: Thile/Aoife - Fairytale of New York from Wassail
