Re: Please allow me to introduce myself...

Welcome to the cafe, Norm. Just to be clear guitar tuning is wacky, mandolin tuning is logical.
  2. Re: Sunday picking sessions at my house are keeping me alive...

I have a group I've been playing with the 4th Tuesday of each month for about 20 yrs. Mostly guitarists, a few of us play electric bass, the host has a stand up and a baby grand. More about playing...

    Re: Point protectors

Please define more specifically what you mean by point protector. Do you want to protect the points on a finished mandolin? Is this about an unfinished build? Speaking from experience (See my post "A...
  4. Re: Are the Flatiron F-5 Mandos As Good As I've Heard?

I've enjoyed my Flatiron Performer F5 since I bought it new in '93. When I was in a band, I got compliments on the tone from other mandolin players at gigs, but that may have more to do with the dual...

    Re: A Pointless Repair

Because of the lack of cushion at the place where the mandolin sees the most pressure as it is set down and stacked with other equipment, the point kept falling off.

    Re: A Pointless Repair

    Alan-
When I picked up the mandolin from Gryphon after the repair, the Northfield rep just happen to be in the store and he let me put my mandolin in the Recurve case he had with him. My case (came...

    Re: A Pointless Repair

    Don-
I think the finish is fairly thick, but the chipping removed some of the wood when the point piece tore off, and that may exaggerate the perception of depth. I wish my phone pic was better...

    Re: A Pointless Repair

BTW the cracks in the top and bottom bindings at the point are from a previous repair when the instrument got knocked off a stand at a gig. I told Frank it didn't have to look perfect (lots of wear...

    A Pointless Repair

I recently took a trip to NJ and NY with my Flatiron, and during the trip I once again had the bottom point break off. Unfortunately, this time I did not find it in the case, like I have in the past....

    Cirotti Trio

I'm back in my home state of NJ for a visit and I hooked up with on old band mate to play a few at the open mic at The Dublin Pub in Morristown. He told me to make sure I got there early so we could...

    Re: Solo Performance Gear

If you don't want to spend QSC levels of cash, the JBL EON 610 (~700W), is what I have been using. Using a PA speaker means no phantom power to power up a preamp for the guitar and mando (I use a...

    Re: beside the mandolin.

My first instrument was a Harmony 5 string with a plastic body (1972?). Learned from the Pete Seeger book. I could never get used to the metal finger picks, so I still play quieter than most. Never...

    Re: Flatiron Performer 1995/1996 volume?

No one ever seems to strain to hear my '93, that I bought new. I play with TI flat wounds and a 1.5 or 2mm thick pick. I seldom play with banjos or fiddles, mostly with too many guitars (2-4) and a...

Re: Would someone please buy this

Such a beauty! There's only 2 things that I don't like about this mandolin: the price and the pick guard. Assuming I could justify the $, just how is that pick guard attached? looks like it is...
  17. Re: What mandolin recordings are definitive to evolving its role?

E.M.D. from The David Grisman Quintet (1977) if I have to pick one song from his catalog, but the whole record puts the instrumental Dawg music stake in the ground.
  18. Re: Newbie question: Mandolin for other instrumentals

Guidance on the correct musical teminology:
Transposing is not the correct term for what you want to do. To transpose is "write or play (music) in a different key from the original".
    What you want...

    Re: Mandolin Influences

I started out in high school influenced by Pete Seeger because I got a banjo when I was a 15. There must have been some mandolin on the Flatt and Scruggs record I had, but I don't remember who it...

It was totally on me that it fell, and I wasn't expecting it to be a warranty issue, but they made that call, in writing, twice. The point of my post was that it got sent back to me twice...
