    Re: Strap making question

If you have strap buttons at the tailpiece and heel of the mandolin, the easiest is a flat piece of leather with a hole to fit in each end.

You can use another thinner strip of leather around...

Re: Picked up a fiddle recently..

If I were even under 40, I'd definitely want to start learning to fiddle. At this point, it's too late. No one will want to hear a mediocre fiddle player who's 95 years old, which would be my age...

Re: Kerman Mandolin status as of 2019

Frankly, I've never heard of them. The website gives NO information. Is there more info anywhere?

    Re: Mandolin Orange Information

Have you tried Jerry Brown at the Rubber Room, a recording studio in Chapel Hill where the CD was recorded? Just a thought; he might have some info if you catch him when he's not working.

    Re: New Northfield Model M

I was the second owner of the #2 Model M. Its tone surprised me with its depth given its price.
The neck was maybe the most comfortable narrow radiused neck I've ever played.
    Very nice...

    Re: Best Armrest

I've bought perhaps 5 or 6 of Doug's armrests through the years. All except the first have been McClungs. Love them.

Re: My pinky won't go where I tell it!

When forming 4 finger chords (chop chords):

    1. Make sure you're approaching th fingerboard like a fiddle player (fingers almost parallel to length of fingerboard, not 'across' the board.)

    Re: Damage to Loar A5???

I think it's in the general vicinity of Oregon now. Elderly in 2010 offered it for $342,000, IIRC. I presume that was a consignment offer.
  9. Re: "New techniques" for instrument restoration (NMC)

    Of course we think that.

Given the amount of knowledge this guy had, and the materials at hand, he didn't do such a bad job. And maybe he just likes tuners to be easily accessible.;)

    Re: Damage to Loar A5???

Seems unlikely, doesn't it? That's why I thought someone might have a good story from the old days.

    Re: Damage to Loar A5???

Addendum: I've looked through some old pix and found some evidence of wear years ago, but perhaps to a lesser degree.
So, I am now supposing that the mandolin is getting some play time and the wear...

    Damage to Loar A5???

I recently came across a picture of the Loar A5 which apparently shows an area where the finish is scraped (or worn) off of the treble side of the upper rib near the heel.
    I'd never noticed that on...

Re: D'Addario Strings - Ask Us Anything

    I'll say it once more:

    Unroll the strings with the loops facing left; then work with 2 strings at a time;
hold the paper tab with your right hand and pull the entire lengths of the 2 strings...

Re: Counting Tree Growth Lines ?

Mike, I think I see your point. The fallacy is that a difference in the age of the individual rings makes a difference.

All the stuff that we discuss about "old wood" and "instruments getting...

Re: D'Addario Delivers A Holiday Turkey

Sorry. I totally disagree. Couldn't stand the feel of the EXP coating.
XTs sound less jangly to me right out of the pack. I really can't FEEL any coating on the XTs. :)

    Re: Dots or no dots

Markers on the face of the fretboard don't matter to me.
Side markers I like and use.

In fact, I wish EVERYBODY would put 2 dots on the side at the 12th fret. I've got some with only one dot...

    Re: Truss rod or not?

    Re: No more EXP74's?

I've had XTs on a couple of mandolins for the past 6 weeks or so. I like the sound and expecially like the feel of the strings much better than EXPs. Only time will tell how long they last in good...
