The book has both standard notation and tab for mandolin.
Absolutely a gem of a recording, just stellar in every way. And the book provides a great resource for learning the tunes. Get them both!
Thanks. Yes, I wrote the Goat tune.
Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was a Loar or Fern. Did that one get repaired or is it still like that?
Love the look of that one. Also a big fan of slim/slender necks. So fast and easy to get around on.
Didn't Ricky sand down a neck on a 20's Gibson till he exposed the truss rod? Seems like I...
There is one tune on my bog cedar top Girouard mandola. I wrote the tune right after getting the mandola and named the tune "Max and Lauri" for the builders. They definitely deserve a shout out!
Tomorrow's show will have That Rhymin' Simon, yes, Paul Simon. And there will be video. I hope there's some mandolin on a Paul Simon tune or two.
Thanks! pheff: That back cover pic was taken about 20 years ago when I was younger and stupider. I found the right mandolin now.
In case anyone wants to know, the mandolin is my 2010 Heiden A5...
In picture 5, your James tailpiece isn't closed all the way. Is it causing the buzz? Also, moving the truss rod should be done in minimal increments and allowed to settle before moving it again.

Always enjoy hearing MO.
Joe, you can stream the audio of the shows at livefromhere.org -- they might be all archived there. You don't have to listen on the radio.
I prefer catching the show when there's a live video...
Old Ebenezer Scrooge is one of the best tunes Monroe wrote.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5vvPJDgvco&t The first time through each part is fairly true to the way it was written.
Portland Maine is just the same as sunny Tennessee according to Jimmy Rodgers.
It does my heart good to hear young folks picking Monroe tunes. Great job, Gunnar!
The show video is no longer available, but they were nice enough to put the Joni Mitchell birthday segment on youtube. At least skip to "A Case of You" as the last song. Knocks me out. Powerful.

I think I got the tracks with the oval. Telling the difference between Crusher and the Fern might as well have been a coin flip.
This is a great show. Two instruments, two voices--masters.

Knocked me right over.
I had the great pleasure of helping David get his book ready for printing since we had worked together on John Reischman's Up in the Woods book. David had everything thought and planned out and he...
Incredible show tonight!! The Joni Mitchell musicians' birthdays segment blew me away--Aoife especially, but the whole band just nailed everything about those songs.
The whole musicians' birthday segment featured Joni Mitchell songs. Aoife O'Donovan really nailed a couple songs. Skip to the middle of the video if you watch nothing else. Unbelievable renditions....
Hilarious!
Brilliant playing, David. Thanks for all the Mandolin Mondays and looking forward to seeing the Golden Angle book sell like hotcakes!
I have one of Max and Lauri's bog cedar topped mandolas. It's an amazing instrument. Great woods, craftsmanship, finish, tone, with a perfect neck profile that I worked with Max on. Highly...
