  1. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Actually, if it says "Gibson" on the peghead, probably not......

    Two thoughts....

Slash played his "boutique" handmade 59 Les Paul for most of his early career.....could be thought of as a...
  2. Re: Franken-F2 on CL, but nice price! In Reading, PA!

My experience is that even vintage guitar dealers with a lot of "guitar" experience don't necessarily know much about mandolins, unless they are a player. The get sold in a vintage guitar shop along...

I would like to add, these "gadgets" are all part of the hobby and make it more fun for certain people. Some people buy songbooks, some people love trying different picks, some people search for the...

    Re: Gruhn's and/ Carter's?

Go to both. Both are great stores. Instruments are instruments -- it doesn't matter who is selling them. I say check out the Nashville pawn shops and Craigslist, too. Lotsa instruments in...

Good luck, Greg! I hope it is the good one!
  6. Re: PayPal fraud in prograess (have you smelled this one before)?

    Three thoughts....

The term "courier" is not used by legitimate buyers.......(red flag similar to "inheritance from Nigerian Prince")

If you send the item to other than a Paypal confirmed...

    Re: Wow, what a flip!

Yep, first rule of vintage instruments: Don't mess with original finish.

    Yep, Marty Stuart it is!
  9. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

For those old enough to remember..........

(actually, I feel like I should include that before most of my posts.....)

Anyway, there was a brief controversy in 1968 when the "then new" Opel GT...

    Re: Banjolin Identification and Help

I don't think it looks that rough.....I've seen much worse, especially on a cheaper laminated instrument where the cut would be hidden by some kind of pot/flange. Certainly could be original, IMHO.

    Re: Hardwood tops

I've never made one, but birch was widely used for inexpensive guitar tops. Harmony brand, for example.

    Re: 1970's F5'S

This era has been discussed on this forum often with no firm conclusions. SURELY, someone is still alive who worked at Gibson who remembers what is up..........? Seems to me that Japan-made...

    Re: eBay sales tax

FWIW, I recently bought some strings on eBay from Musician's Friend. I really didn't care who the seller was, I just sorted by the best price with free shipping and clicked. Even though the seller...

    Re: Any arguments AGAINST MAS?

I think the idea of owning more than one instrument at a time or collecting is a relatively new concept. I say that having interviewed many older musicians and asking about what they played at such...

    Re: Banjolin Identification and Help

I have no idea who made it or where it was made. There is probably zero chance of restoring it with the correct parts, unless you find another identical donor instrument, but if it were mine and I...

Re: The Bluegrass Store - Columbus OH

Went to OSU in the 70's. Great town for music and music stores, back then. In addition to those mentioned, there was a short-lived shop at 13th and High, near the Agora, not the String Shoppe --...

Re: The Bluegrass Store - Columbus OH

I've been there many times. It is tiny, basically a couple rooms in an old house. The jam is held in the basement. If four or five people are in the store it would be crowded. There are a lot of...

Re: German 12 string guitar info needed

If you can "unglue" the neck from the body, then you can shim the neck pocket just like an electric guitar and dial in the action to where you like it.

I have done this before with Fender type...

  21. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

It seems a lot of people are confusing the politics with the product. I like my Gibsons. Granted, they are all vintage, but still. Also, I repair and setup a lot of recent Gibsons and think the...
  22. Re: Vintage banjo mandolin, banjolin, appreciate any info. TIA

It looks very nice. The key to getting more than $100-200 for it on eBay is being able to identify it and find a collector of that brand. If you check eBay completed sales most of the unidentified...

Re: Storage: Case vs Hanging on the Wall
