Re: Hey dude, ya forgot the pickups!

Made thousands of pickups with neo magnets and never had issues with strings being pulled out of tune (need damn big N52s to overcome mandolin tension) ;)
  3. Re: Replacement humbucker pickup for Eastman El Rey Lollar

Half P-Bass pickups are fine (Epi Mandobirds got away with them for years) although without modification, there will still be the string imbalance problem.

As for magnet strength, shouldn`t make...
  4. Re: Replacement humbucker pickup for Eastman El Rey Lollar

Yup! My guess is that something really small could make a big difference........maybe try a 5mmX1mm........ Cheap enough (ebay) so no harm trying.
Basically, the string is the magnet and compared to...
  5. Re: Replacement humbucker pickup for Eastman El Rey Lollar

Have you had a look under the pickup? ...... If those poles are rod magnets, then you may be able to tweak the balance by adding small Neodymium discs.
If they have a bar magnet underneath, then...

Re: Retirement....Time to take it easy!

Tom`s bang on.....beat me to it!
The only reason the magnet is within the coil is for convenient packaging (otherwise, how would those "horseshoe" lap steel pickups work?

Re: Retirement....Time to take it easy!

Re: Retirement....Time to take it easy!

Hi Martin, yes...... Belvoir will continue the Belmuse building...... Chris has taken on his son officially as apprentice and they`re getting trained up next week.

    After that, I`ll be handing...

Re: Retirement....Time to take it easy!

Hmmmmm.......Favourite builds?..... probably Tom`s SG, a mini "Red Special" complete with the six switches (that was fun to wire up) and the "Barney Bo" (such a whacky shape and fun to...

    Retirement....Time to take it easy!

Due to increasing hand problems, I regret that Almuse has ceased trading.....I should have been more careful when building instruments but hey ho! ..... had a good run!

    Firstly, I`d like to thank...

Re: Chris has been at it again!

Chris has been at it again!

I rather like this one for it`s simplicity....20" scale Octave Mandola based on his "Tripper" guitar shape.

    Re: First E-Mandolin build

Hey Englishman, presumably you are in England then?
If so, try Strings Direct ..... they sell single strings so you can make your own set up.
I suggest D`Addario XL electric guitar strings in...

Cripes.....I knew you`d built quite a lot but didn`t realise it was that many!!!!!!!!!
  18. Re: looking for Ideas in adding pickup coils to an old mandolin..

If you`re looking for an inexpensive way to do it, I`ve had reasonable results with stripping a cheap guitar humbucker - the coils are shallow so if you`re not worried about the finish, then simply...
  19. Re: Replacement bridge for Epiphone MandoBird VIII?

Hey Roger, nothing wrong with the original with a couple of tweaks.
In my experience, the neck angle as standard is wrong so the bridge is usually as low as it will go and often the action is too...
  20. Re: 4 String Electric Mandolin recommended strings?

Chris usually uses a 10 thou E. ...... D`Addario electric guitar strings bought individually. Might be worth double checking with him as he may well have gone a thou thicker. If you stick with...

Re: Tweaks for weak sounding E strings

Part of the problem is the difference in string gauges ........ since mandos are tuned in 5ths (rather than 4ths as guitars and ukes), there is a larger step between gauges.
    A lot of people don`t...
