  4. Re: Bluegrass Mandolin Jam Tunes by Rick Williams any good?

Quite a few free tunes and lessons on the site.
    Looks like a great resource.
  5. Re: Article: New Music - Plucked Bach II, by Alon Sariel

    Delightful playing.
I notice there seems to be quite bit of reverb on the recording - and it works well IMO.
I tend to not add reverb when recording my own (modest) solo efforts, but will...

Re: Grappelli style harmonics in swing jazz?

Encountering Sacha Distel originally as a middle of the road crooner, I was surprised when I learnt that he had been a decent jazz guitarist and had composed two classic songs: The Good Life and Ma...

Grappelli style harmonics in swing jazz?

While we do have 12 or so natural harmonics available on the mandolin, I haven't heard them employed as freely as violinists use them in swing jazz.

    Grappelli in particular (e.g. 1.00 to 1.04...

Re: What is or was this?

    Gulp!

This is one of the weirdest I've seen.
I'm thinking I should really stop checking out these auctions altogether ... but they do exert a certain fascination.

    Does indeed sound nice.
  11. Re: 'Fast Car' Grammy Guitar - connection to Michael Heiden

Thanks so much for posting this Brad.
Brings back a memory of the night in 1988 when I saw a young and relatively unknown girl with a big dreadnought guitar come onto the stage alone in a huge...

    Re: Gig material

Two that I have used for similar occasions that have simple chords and are possibly familiar to most of your group:

    Me too back in 1962.

Thanks Mike for posting your really neat version.

Prompted me to check out the Cascades online and found 2 versions: one from 1962 and another from what appears to be a...
  15. Imitation tortoise-shell on older mandolins?

    211887

I'm wondering about the decorative material on my 1930s Gerome
Seems like it could be some type of plastic imitation tortoise-shell.
The Gerome mandolins often featured this as did...

Re: Amando sobre o mar - Waltz

Nice work Jairo - hadn't come across this waltz before.
It lends itself well to the mandolin.
I see there was a 1952 film about the life of the composer:

I acquired this via French site Leboncoin - some interesting instruments can appear there but you usually need a French phone number and mailing address.

It needed some attention: raising the...

    Re: Vintange Mandolins in Ireland

When I was growing up in Cork in the 1960s I only came across low-end imported mandolins.
And I believe they only began to make a mark when Sweeney's Men and Planxty started to feature them in the...

Re: Happy Birthday - Django Reinhardt

Django in Montmartre in May looks promising.
3 days aimed at guitarists and violinists but should be of interest for mandolin also.

    Re: What are these chords

Adding to my post above: what I thought was Bb/C for the first "Bb" makes more sense as Fsus4 which does make sense in this context I guess.

    Re: What are these chords

Seems to me like he maintains the C note on the bottom string with his pinky when going to the first Bb giving a nice version of Bb/C with a suspended 9 on the bass (531x).

    The later Bb to C...
