Re: F5 peghead tuner holes a la Siminoff.

Thanks Mike, I've looked at the link and it is interesting and informative. It doesn't address my question , although it has given me the idea of just adapting the hole positions to suit my tuners....

F5 peghead tuner holes a la Siminoff.

Hi folks, just got round to marking out the centres for the tuner holes, and referenced the Siminoff book. The tuners I have are the winder above post type, and so the the book on diagram 18 it...

Tru-oil, 4 or 5 coats then buff with 0000 steel wool.
  4. Re: PLEASE HELP! ABS Binding Bending Problems First Time Builder

I'm certainly not experienced in this topic, or at least I wasn't until this afternoon. I melted some abs in acetone and applied a drop of goo to a binding mitre, voila!
I can confirm it does melt...

    Re: binding channel cutting options

Hi Andrew, am I right in saying that you use the spool clamps as a form of cradle to keep the body level, so you would have to rout a section and then move the clamps around to rout the next section....

    Re: V joint question

Well, this started out as a question about the V joint, but I'm leaning more towards a dovetail now. I'll practice a bit more like you suggest.
    many thanks everyone.

    Re: V joint question

Well thanks for the clarification both Vernon and Clinton, appreciated. And Jim, my mind is still open about this. You've made me consider the dovetail, in fact I cut a practise joint this afternoon...

    Re: V joint question

Hi Vernon, forgive me if I'm wrong but I understand a neck block to be the part of the body that receives the neck, is this what you mean? Or do you mean the heel end of the neck? thanks Mike.

    Re: Inside the scroll

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I've got a little more carving to do. It will be interesting to see exactly how much the shavings weigh that I take off. If I remember, I'll save them. Cheers Mike

    Re: V joint question

Thanks Jim, I can cut a dovetail but as this is my first attempt at building mandolins, I can see the V joint giving me more scope for adjustment and tweaking of the fit.

    V joint question

The Siminoff book describes the method for this V joint and dowels to attach the neck. He puts the neck angle in the body half (mortise?) by tilting the body 6degrees when he cuts the V on the...

    Inside the scroll

Hi everyone, I've almost finished carving and graduating my 2 builds(A5 and F5). I've seen some builders on YT videos, carve a small channel on the inside of the scroll on the back and top. Is there...

    Re: Fret Size Opinions

In trying to translate the FW74 into English, or at least something that might be available here in the UK, it seems that the Jescar 43080 wire has the same dimensions. So maybe the LMII have their...

    Re: Old Safe-T-Planer, new cutters?

I don't know for sure, but I've searched for an answer to this question before, and concluded by reading through other forums that the cutters are not compatible. I hope somebody proves me wrong as I...

Re: Mandolin Set-up E-Book by Rob Meldrum

Many thanks Rob, I received the e-book this morning. A quick glance through it suggests it will be very useful to me when the time comes, and my 2 intended builds are finished. Great source of info....

    Re: another contour map question

Thanks Andrew, I agree the STP seems anything but safe. I've never really used it much but I'll have a few practice runs on scrap first. Having routed binding channels on around 10 instruments, I'm...

    another contour map question

  23. Re: My only Mandolin's nut got damaged, what is my best option?

The obvious remedy is a new nut as stated above, but if it's only a very small chip, it might be possible to repair it by making a filler with CA glue and baking soda, then refiling the slot. This is...
