  1. Re: Good Tone - How long does it actually take?

With fingerstyle, the RH has a larger %. But until you get your LH finesse, you won't "sing" on the instrument. But if all you want to do is play fast notey lines (like a majority of mando players...
  2. Re: Good Tone - How long does it actually take?

Way over 50% of tone comes from the player's hands and fingers. And it is BOTH HANDS. Too often the fretting fingers are not given enough attention.

I did a workshop at Kaufman's Kamp back in...

    Re: Finger style mandolin

Oh come on! It's not something "brand new".

I've been using right hand fingers for 40 years, usually in the hybrid Tele pick+finger(s) style of guitarists like James Burton, Richard Thompson,...

Re: Mandolin and Clawhammer Banjo duos

No Judy doesn't play mandolin as far as I know. What those columns involved was taking what she was demonstrating on fiddle and trying to replicating that sound on mandolin, which involved a lot of...

Re: Mandolin and Clawhammer Banjo duos

    To correct an error in my previous post;

Actually it is "Shady Grove" that gets some clawhammer treatment. ("In The Pines" drifts into SRV/Hendrix territory in the last couple of its solos.)

Re: Mandolin and Clawhammer Banjo duos

The problem with playing oldtime tunes/songs on mandolin is that too often it comes off as sounding bluegrassy.

Mandolin can be played in a manner where it does sound oldtime, but it requires a...

    Re: Tunes in "F"

On fiddles and mandolin, tunes in F have a different flavor than the same tunes played in D.

    Why?

It all has to do with the relationship of the open strings to the key you are playing in. In...
  10. "Advanced Seach" results now showing Oldest first

Using the "advanced search" (old search), the results are now showing "oldest first". I don't see any way to reset it to most current results. Screenshot attached.

It is simply a quick explanation of how moving the closed pattern up or down the neck will give you a different scale. By lowering the first finger to the 4th fret and starting on the B...

  21. Re: New to mando...coming from guitar...where would you start?

Play the stuff you play on guitar on the mandolin (but use mando fingerings). You want to burn in the sonic associations already in your head with the new fretboard. You can start to play it...
