  1. Re: Upside down "Whale" inlay on headstock - Where from?

Along with the originally mentioned builders, Will used it, and I just saw it on a Kentucky.
I did a version that was a little different. Someone once said mine looked like a frollicking person in...
  2. Re: Praise for the contoured and rectangular Ameritage cases

The company is GWW and they made custom cases for me that were not as fancy as the Ameritage line but basically in the same box. I was able to select exterior and interior colors and hardware options...
  3. Re: Upside down "Whale" inlay on headstock - Where from?

Quick look through Google and found this from 1908. Inlay was positioned low on the peghead. A 1906 in the Archive has a flower inlay instead.
  4. Re: Upside down "Whale" inlay on headstock - Where from?

It was on the Gibson A-3 model but I'm not sure of the dates.

It's like 6 degrees to Kevin Bacon. All conversation eventually leads to mandolins.
  6. Re: PBS documentary on the history of Bluegrass

Watched it. It was great! Maybe more on Japanese bluegrass than needed, but very did a great job of following the branches from Bill. Great interviews with so many influential players as well as...

    Re: New case option

I would say there's less of an attempt to make it look high end with the shiny material and hygrometer, just utilitarian. My concern with a case is that the bridge be protected and with the neck and...

    Re: New case option

I got the dreadnaught case some time ago to replace the old hardshell. It's great.
They must nick you for shipping when ordering direct.
Doh! Need to read. $10 shipping.

    New case option

My friend Geo showed up with his Gibson in this Pro Rock Gear case. Looked it up on Amazon and it's $79. Not even listed as a mandolin case, it's called a Folk and World music case.
    I like the way...

    Re: Prettiest Peghead Inlays Ever

This is by no means the prettiest ever but maybe the prettiest I ever did.
A lady who ordered a mandolin sent a drawing of this, otherwise I would have never thought of it.

Re: Always surprised how people send stuff

I have a friend with a '54 Fender 3 neck table steel. Such a massive block of wood it weighs a ton.
It's in a period correct tweed case with a lot of the leatherette on the ends deteriorating. One...

Re: 1976 Gehrardt Green F5 Pictures

In a timeline you would find this was about the time Steve Gilchrist made his first mandolins, Mike Kemnitzer was about 2 years in and Tom Ellis was building in Austin and I assume knows Jeff and...

    I, too was perplexed.
  16. Re: Check out this mandolin...... Thoughts, comments, concerns

I just got to hang out with Jeff Harrison last weekend. He's played bass in the San Antonio based band Tennessee Valley Authority for 30 or so years. My friend Marty Javors plays guitar.
    Jeff's...
  17. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

These were totally off my radar so I watched a video from when these were introduced by one of these guitubers explaining how it worked and showed what was under the electronics cover.
    What were...

Re: Stupid(?) question re: resawing wood

    I'll continue talking amongst myself.
This is a re-saw fence made by Kreg I found at Rockler. Had to adapt it to the Delta fence. Just set up for the picture, don't have the 3/4" blade on the saw.
  20. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

So when they made the original Flying V they made about 90 and the Les Paul sunburst, what 3-400? How did they commit to that many guiars without at least a trial run to see how they sold?

Re: Stupid(?) question re: resawing wood

And speaking to stupid questions, I can give a very good example. In 1973 I asked the first guy I knew who had made an F5 "Is an F harder to build than an A"? Here's your sign.

Re: Stupid(?) question re: resawing wood

I was going mention the fence problem but it didn't seem to be what the question was about. But in full agreement with Marty. If you try to follow a fence it is probably going to either wander and...

    Re: Fingerboard Extensions

My first real mandolin order (other than for close friends) I did my swooping fingerboard end with 21 frets instead of a traditional gibson extension. When I sent a picture to the buyer he wrote back...
