Re: No mando content: Remembering Ginger Baker

What more to say. One of the all time greats, maybe the greatest... can’t help being reminded of Jaco, his undeniable musical genius and intense struggle with his own personal demons.

    Re: Dots or no dots

Clean fingerboard on my 5jr. I can’t actually recall when (if ever) I looked to locate a marker on the fretboard.

    Re: Pre Gibson Epiphone Mandolin

Total respect, I’ve been a fan of the machine for years. His current lineup kills.
There’s a great story that accompanies that guitar btw when Rawlings was living in LA. It’s part of his DNA.

That old cheapie epi Dave Rawlings plays is as raw as it gets...he hammers it for everything it can give.

    Re: Collings MT2 Review

Nice update, good to hear you’re enjoying the journey. Not intending to hijack the thread but I’ve always thought Kym Warner and his ability (and great hands) sets the bar for what these babies are...

    Re: Mandolins "Opening Up"

It’s a combined sense on a cold instrument, I can hear it as well as feel it as it’s warming up.

    Re: Collings MT2 Review

I would agree with your conclusion. The greatest noticeable changes I’ve experienced with early playtime is increased depth and roundness in the lower and mid register.

    I’m a huge fan of...

    Re: Prettiest Peghead Inlays Ever

Since you did say, ‘prettiest inlays ever’....Larry Robinson (the grandpoobah), Harvey Leach, and Grit (William) Laskin perform some of the finest custom inlay work anywhere in the world. It’s a...

    Re: Woodstock

That’s exactly right, by the time the four of us got there after a 3-4 mile trek (over 3-4 hours time), the 7 foot fences were trampled and no one was entering through gates, everyone was stepping...

Re: Original cost of a Lloyd Loar F5

To put things in perspective, Henry Ford sold around 15 million Model T’s from 1908-1927. In ‘23 the cost was about $350 each and as production increased the window sticker dropped to around $250 in...

Re: Gibson destroys hundreds of Firebird X's

Henry should have consulted Fender first :))
  16. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

There are so many great electrics, Collings, John Suhr, Tom Anderson etc. that I honestly haven’t paid attention to either new Fender or Gibson guitars for many years so I have no dog in this. The...
  17. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Couldn’t agree more. I was certainly thinking this and alluded to it in the later part of my post above, but then that would have required some actual thought and work to achieve this on their part. ...
  18. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

After a quick google it appears they’re real. Not faulting them for eliminating the dog food not selling and writing down a million or so including the operator of the shovel but the lineup of...
  19. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

I assume this was sponsored by Gibson but don’t know for sure. It seems to me there are better options to eliminate final inventory and take the write off, certainly more reverent ones than resorting...

    Re: Gruhn's and/ Carter's?

I worked with Christy and Walter only when they were with Gruhn. Believe they had a very loyal following then as well as now at Carterland. I can't vouch for George but the other two are first class...

  22. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Although $350 million is a mere rounding error in a very small corner of KKR's investment space, rest assured that shareholder value will take precedence over all else and there will be extreme...

Re: Show off your back side

No, but they'll see your amp. :))

George A makes some of the baddest amps on the planet but they're also pieces of fine art. I love the looks of my mandolins besides being superb music makers.
