I think it should be said that the strings should be removed BEFORE taking off the tailpiece. It's really obvious, but it should be mentioned nonetheless.

I've said it in the other thread, I'm going to have to back down, I ended up getting an IV kit.
I think I'll have to back out on this one. I've decided instead to get an IV kit, their service seems a little more reliable.
then what's the problem? does it intonate?
I recommend the book "constructing a bluegrass mandolin" by Roger Siminoff. I've read about halfway through and in comparison to some of the other lutherie books I've read (eg. Ukulele Design and...
I'd say do what big joe says, use a scraper. I use a spokeshave, but that may take off too much material.
I'm no expert, but I'd leave it - sometimes the little blemishes make something unique. Why is it that you can't leave it?
I think perhaps just using a colour matched wood filler is a good idea,...
ME, I'd like to get a handle on the mandolin before thinking of building one from scratch, I'd prefer an F, but an A is doable if you have to get a bunch of the same ones. I'm not sure about money...
I have not built one yet, but I plan on it.
Others have as well, but I have yet to see very many of them.
Me too. Count me in for either an A or F-style.
I'm a little tempted to get either an A or an F myself - seems like a bit of a better idea than building one from scratch from a cigarbox.
I saw this auction just last night, while I was looking at mandolins on ebay. There is actually one I just might buy, but about this one I was a little taken aback, I was wondering if it were legal,...
they probably don't have an F-style kit, I've never seen one, but it makes me think of one - I guess if Saga were to make an F-style it would look a lot like that.
looking at that kit makes me think of a Saga. I'm really not sure, but Sagas generally tend to be good in terms of build quality, though hardware can tend to need improvement.
That looks really nice! I like the army/navy style mandos, they've got some element to them that a lot of archtops seem to lack.
Would they even ship large quantities of wood? Particularly, would they even ship large quantities of wood into Canada?
Leo Fender designed today's most popular electric guitars, and the first commercially successful electric bass (the fender precision bass, note - he did NOT invent it, he was just the first to...
thanks for the corredction, like I said I'm no expert, and I try to learn something new every day.
/\ did not think of that one, I figured it could have been sapwood - but of course I think most people would be smart to avoid that sort of thing. I'm no expert on the subject, but it doesn't seem...
yeah I kinda figured, I'm going to be heavily reinforcing the corners and the soundboard, particularly at the corners and the edges between the soundboard/back and the sides. I also forgot to...
Hello, members of the mandolin cafe forum community. This is my second time posting on this forum, so I suppose I'll start with a bit of an introduction. My real name is Pierre, but you can just call...
First post in this forum, so I'm a newb at this. I've build a saga strat kit and I've been satisfied with the results. It's not a mandolin, I understand that, but I'm going to say that this kit was ...
