  1. Re: Day by day (instrumental, for lead mandolin)

I liked the music alot, but I had to scroll away from the picture because I don't like spiders :))

  2. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

I guess I opened a can of worms clarinet-wise. I wasn't putting down the clarinet at all. As a kid I picked it for its sound and for the fact that you often got to play the melody. I'd still have one...
  3. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

So did it work? For sure clarinet is a fairly nerdy instrument

  4. Re: When did you realize mandolin was your primary instrument?

Hah hah, when I was a teenager, I probably would have been attracted to the mandolin player (because of the mandolin). Something different, and I liked that. :))

On the main question, I wanted a...
  5. Re: Funny reference to Bluegrass in mystery novel

Less on the topic of crime or mystery books, but music and Appalachia related, how about Manly Wade Wellman's Silver John books? Sort of supernatural-ish, science fiction-ish; Silver John and his...

    Re: Amazon warehouse deals

I have a 98 Kentucky KM200S I got in March (1st mandolin - couldn't find a suitable used KM150 at the time, but that's what I wanted) and a 40's Strad-O-Lin I got in July. Both are well set up now....

    Re: This Gibson legit?

Okay, this doesn't have anything to do with Gibson, but you guys are talking about crazy looking instruments, so I just have to add a link to this guitar on Jake Wildwood's blog.

    Be sure to look...
  9. Re: HOLY BEANBUCKETS! The Colonel's Mandolin Band LP AUTOGRAPHED!

What an amazing article. He bought all those mandolins for the kids, they traveled around in the van, and most of the records are still sitting at the restaurant in Corbin, KY where they can be had...
  10. Re: HOLY BEANBUCKETS! The Colonel's Mandolin Band LP AUTOGRAPHED!

I guess you guys knew it, but I never even knew the Colonel had a Mandolin Band. Wonders never cease.

  11. Re: The mandolin is more than just a folk instrument

Since I took up the mandolin and started perusing this forum, I have not only learned about so much music I never knew about, but also was reminded of things I haven't listened to in years and years...

  13. Possible bargain 30's Strad-O-Lin near Bend, OR

My daughter lives out this way, so I look at their craigslist from time to time. Needs work, but they are only asking $150 and who knows they might take less.

Re: Heads up for you Mandolinists with Cats

That's pretty amazing. Compared to your cats, my torti Smudge, at 14, is a youngster herself!
  15. Re: Quarantine Collaboration - (and appreciation)

A great story, a great new friendship, and great picking! Like Dan said, it's hard to believe you weren't playing together in the same place!

Re: '30 Epiphone Tenor - Mansion on the Hill

Hah! I need another instrument like I need a hole in the head (as my Dad used to say). :))
Besides, I am still quite infatuated with my Strad-O-Lin.

That is a very cool looking and sounding...

Re: Worst scroll of the last century?

Jim, thank you for resurrecting this epic thread. I went back to the beginning and chuckled my way through three cups of coffee.

  19. Re: What do you do when you're Just. Not. Feeling it?

This is a big problem for me. When I went to Vermont to get my Strad-O-Lin set up and heard how good it sounded in the hands of someone with a high skill level, i felt very frustrated and impatient...

Heads up for you Mandolinists with Cats

This has minimal mandolin content, but I have noticed that there seem to be a fair number of people here who share their homes with cats (ie. pages and pages of cats sitting in cases :)), cats in...
