  1. Re: got a live one here folks, and he is coming in hot

If you have a piezo and not a preamp in your mandolin the added pickup, as Ray says, is the same technology as it was decades ago. Some sizing and thickness differences, but the same technology. I...

Re: New bridge and/or pickup recommendations

Most movable bridges will move or tip from tuning over time. As J Mangio says pull it back to straight, you may not need a new bridge. This is fairly common.

Re: Mystery corrosion - anyone know why?

If they are played every day off-gassing in the case won't be as much of a problem.

Re: Payment for Mandolins on Mandolin Cafe

I just sent a check, I have done it before and never had problems. In one instance I mailed the check for an amp and the builder mailed the amp the same day. I had asked him to send it as soon as he...

    Re: Eighth of January

As I heard it, yes, Jimmy wrote the words to an existing tune. There is also the 28th of January, which is another great tune. No words that I know of.

There is a little badge in the lower right corner of the pic. I think that is what Ray is talking about

Re: Has COVID affected your MAS?

Way to go Daryl, I will confess I also have a banjo mandolin, but 11 banjos, Whew!! I did learn a long time ago I could build tube amps better than the originals so at least I gave that up. I can...

Re: Has COVID affected your MAS?

Thanks JB, but you know how we don't want to admit we have a problem. What problem? I don't have a problem. Well maybe not enough $$ to buy everything I would like, but I think that is a problem for...

Re: Has COVID affected your MAS?

I have played the same 1890 banjo for 40-50 years, I don't think getting a newer one is really a problem. Now mandolins or guitars that may be a problem.

    Re: Cafe Classified

It's really simple look at the mandolin ad, look who is selling. It's easy spot a dealer. I like looking at several mandolins and dealers have a lot of the mandolins I like to see, and/or hear. There...

    Re: Vintage Gibson A4

It is possible the screw has backed out of the foot of the bridge and is sticking up too high. If it is seated, it is too long and should be cut off. Either way it should be checked.

    Re: bending pipe

I have bent guitar sides on a mold using silicone heating pads, it works fine. The sides bent by hand retained their shape better than those bent on a mold, but both worked.

    Re: Vintage?

My son was born in 1979, but since I bought my stereo overseas in the late 60's I had a turntable. He would have been one that would know how to use it.

Zach, I have shirts older than you. Sorry...

No apology necessary. I've been where you are, and some of it I can still remember, haha. 70 is the new 40 so they say. I say, I entered geezerdome a couple years ago.

  19. Re: Getting started questions (intonation, setup, instruction)

I'm with Mark on this. Sometimes I will go lower than what is measured at the second fret as there is less movement at the first fret. I want my instruments to play easily.

Re: Best strings for magnetic pickup mandolin?

Pickup height can be adjusted, sometimes also pole piece height too, to balance the sound somewhat. A larger string will be louder given the same adjustments. I would say all sets will have a plain E...

Since it's on the tailpiece and not the mandolin finish, it really doesn't matter.
