    Re: Colortone nitrocellulose lacquer

sliebers, Glad to know there were no hitches. What do you seal with? I've always used shellac, but not knowing where the colortone originates I bought some vinyl sealer as well. Love the burst too....

    Colortone nitrocellulose lacquer

I was wondering if anyone knew who actually makes this. It looks like the Colortone factory is in California. Could they really allow nitro to be made in Cal. I'm sure it could cause cancer lol.

    Re: lacquer problem

The check cracks in the photos posted are much larger than any I had, These were 1/8" to maybe 3/4" long. And I don't wet sand between coats if that was what was meant. I was wet sanding before...

    Re: lacquer problem

John MacPhee, I'll try to get some pictures. Until yesterday I was trying to repair them so I'll look for more. These were not noticeable until I was wet sanding

    Re: lacquer problem

Wrnchbndr, No odd mixes, tints or additives. Just shellac flakes melted in alcohol sealer, Behlin lacquer and a real slow evaporating lacquer thinner. Same as I've been using. The finish has cured...

    Re: lacquer problem

Thanks John. Wow, that was quick. I've only had it for 5-6 months I think. Though who knows how long WoodCrafter's had it. Now hearing Mohawk grabbed up Behlins makes me wonder. Guess I'll just...

    lacquer problem

Howdy everyone. I haven't posted for quite some time.
I have built around 85 mandolins and close to 30 guitars and have never had the finish problem I'm seeing on my last mandolin.
    I used...

    Re: illegible parlor guitar label

Heres the top. Once a ladder brace, someone tried half hearted to X brace it.
It also was originally a floating bridge with a tailpiece.

    Re: illegible parlor guitar label

I had a 00-18 through my shop that was a martin for Wurlitzer and it did have both Wurlitzer and the Martin Nazareth Penn stamped in the back of the peghead. It was in terrible shape but I did use it...

    Re: Joining back panel plates

Also have the two halves as close to final thickness as you are comfortable with. Makes less drag on your plane iron and like pops said set it for very thin shavings.
Also I have my plane clamped...

    Re: illegible parlor guitar label

Thanks Mike and Jim and Jim. Not sure if I'll get to it or pass it on to an aspiring new luthier. It's nice to know what make it is. The previous owner tried to convert from ladder to X bracing. It's...

I received an invitation to show my instruments at this gathering in Burnsville NC.

    illegible parlor guitar label

    Re: Darkening Walnut

Sealing with a darker shellac will take it in that direction. For that much change you may need to tint a wash coat. It can be deceiving though so as always try it first on a scrap.

Well the Cocobolo 00-14 fret ended up with a rubbed stain top. The owner was very pleased and so was I.
Again I'll say thanks to James Condino for some lovely wood.
