Re: Rest in Peace - Byron Berline passes

Too young to go. His playing had a unique lilt and flow. I was glad to follow him thru several bands over many years.

    Re: LiuQin

I traveled to China about 20 years ago and I kinda' fell in love with their music, their art and their culture.

The er hu is my favorite Chinese instrument. It's one of those upright bowed...

Re: Your thoughts on this old Kay?

I second the recommendation by Mr. Garber to attend to the back cracks and leave the pearloid pickguard as is. In fact, I kinda' like the patina. Very cool guitar. It's a design that appeals to me...

Re: Four Finger Chop Chords and the Pain!

Make every other measure an arpeggio to give your hand a rest. The ears also like variety.
  9. Re: DGBE (Chicago) Tuning: A and Bb/A# chords are weird

Not every chord needs all 4 strings. Find the best sounding partial chord that's easy to grab. Inversions up the neck may sound good too, but context is important.

    Re: Changing strings--winding and leaving?

I like the method mentioned by Drew above. If you wind the string and then put it thru the hole, only a few turns of the tuner are needed.

After I get the string looped to the tailpiece, up the...

    Re: Loar tail piece pin

Low household humidity may cause wood shrinkage and the end-pin then becomes loose. Raise the humidity and/or follow the good suggestions above.

Not to belittle your problem, but this issue shows...

    Re: Kentucky octave mandolin

If you're referring to the Kentucky "Dawg" series of mandolins, mandolas and octaves I think they are all somewhat rare. I don't recall seeing a 'cello along those lines though.

    I am fortunate to...

Thanks Aaron for spending the time and energy on this lesson.

Anybody out there wanting to learn chord melody, start here.

    Great song choice too!
  24. Re: Six strings are just too much! (but 8 might work...)

On your 6-string guitar, try using the Freddie Green 3-note chord style. Very effective and easy on the hands.

For those documenting Dawg mandolins, is there any interest in adding Dawg mandolas? I have one and would be glad to contribute - who's collecting info and where/how do I post?
